Civil engineer. One assignment was design a dam for the city of Sherman Texas. Basically the professor’s company on the side was the project engineer and he was having 10 teams of two check his work. It was built and has been in place for 25 years. We also were told to optimize a water distribution system for Denver City Texas. Your senior year is a system of projects for the real world.

Beavers only work 5 hours a day, engineers a lot more!

Hydrology and water resources engineering are basically what you’re describing without saying it. Environmental engineering programs cover a lot of the same ground and tend to be more available than pure civil. Also look into hydrogeology if you’re more into the groundwater/contamination side.

The fun thing nobody tells you: actual beaver reintroduction is a legit career field now. Look up “low-tech process-based restoration” and “beaver dam analogs” — agencies like USFWS, BLM, and state fish & wildlife departments are hiring restoration ecologists specifically to study and mimic what beavers do for stream recovery. Watershed councils and groups like the Beaver Coalition do this work too.

If the engineering math scares you off, a degree in fisheries/wildlife bio or watershed science gets you in the door on the ecology side.

Hydrology and water resources engineering are basically what you’re describing. Civil eng with a water resources concentration is the broadest path and has the strongest job market, but environmental engineering programs often go deeper on contamination and irrigation. Also worth looking at watershed management (often through forestry/natural resources programs), hydrogeology (usually a geology degree route), or agricultural engineering if irrigation is the main draw.

Big employers in this space: USGS, state DNRs, EPA, Army Corps of Engineers, NRCS, and consulting firms doing dam safety, stormwater, and Superfund cleanup work.

And since you actually love beavers — look up “low-tech process-based restoration” (LTPBR) and “beaver dam analogs” (BDAs). There’s a real movement of biologists and restoration ecologists using literal beaver engineering to fix degraded streams. “Beaver believer” is an actual informal job title in parts of the western US, and outfits like Anabranch Solutions and the Beaver Coalition hire for this work. Might scratch the nerd itch better than pure civil eng — and you’d still get to nerd out on hydrology.

I think the environmental awareness is the major deviating factor in your interests. You dont just want to build dams, you want to create dams which are in harmony with the ecosystem. cant help you im afraid but i wish you all the best, an eco-aligned dam designer is something which would undoubtedly be a positive for humanity.
