Let me ask you this – what even is “normal”? What is it to you? Because if you’re feeling so hung up about that, wanting to be normal and all – take a listen to the song **Higher I’ll Go** by **Ryo Takahashi**. Hopefully that will get a new perspective on things.

I grew up with autism, where social situations as a kid was pretty much my living hell growing up. As an adult it has gone better with time. But apart from my issues with fast speech, after spending a few years in retail customer service as a Sales Associate, I wound up getting relatively used to it. Where after thinking about it in terms of “how do I solve the problem the customer’s currently facing, or on the task I’m given”, I ended up becoming more open and approachable – as long as the said topic itself is something I’m familiar with. Does this mean I’m now good at being buddy buddy with my co-workers, or with people in general? That I’m 100% confident at work at all times? Heck no. Where depending on my overall emotional state I might get into changing states of being a confident leader, to suddenly reserved and quiet type. But I do my best to forget the bad moments and move on.

It’s the same thing with social situations – find a group based on an share interest, get over the initial round of fears and stares in the first few meetings, go at it consistently – despite you might having a chronic urge to want to avoid it at all costs. For the best way to deal with social situations, and especially its annoying sister – social anxiety, is by diving right in and getting better through consistency and effort. As much as I hated my family around me tell that growing up, it is very much painfully true.

If I came across the anime Wind Breaker as a kid, I would’ve cried. For that anime taught me more about mental health and emotional well being than what my shit family ever did. Anyways, the key message I got from that was:

    >”Don’t give up on people. There will be someone or a group of people out there that will accept you for who you are, not what you do or accomplish. Don’t be afraid, to jump right in!”

But with that said, if you do want to consider doing different career paths, consider going back into school again. One that preferably has a good co-op program. Is there anything you’re interested in? Hobbies? Now based on said interests – is there a viable career in which you can get out of it? Start there. For you learn the best and achieve the highest grades when you’re learning something you truly enjoy studying and doing. And since the end goal of getting any job is to get you to be at a financial state where you’re able to live by yourself just fine – why not make your true job path, one in which you truly like doing?
