#yay

Dude. You’re 22. Plenty of time to figure it out and make it in the video industry.

Have you tried looking at niche job boards? Do you have a portfolio? Have you volunteered at film studios or on set anywhere?

I have an English degree, because like you, I’m a creative. My goal is to become a novelist/creative writer. I currently find myself in a journalism role. I hate it, but it’s getting me by.

The problem with our degrees/industries is that it’s a broad spectrum and not a pipeline line medical or tech or law. Just throw yourself out there into anything and see what sticks.

You sound like a great fit for a marketing team. Particularly any company that has an extensive range of physical products to sell (eg property, commercial real estate).

All the skills you’ve listed would make you super valuable to that team so certainly not useless.

I’m sorry, I don’t know what a “film degree” means specifically. Camera operator? Editor? Writer? Director?

    Edit to add;
You say you need a portfolio, so I believe that means that you plan to do this as an independent film maker? I don’t believe getting a j.o.b. involves having a portfolio? It’s really hard to give advice with your vague description of your training, and what you intend to do with it. If you want a j.o.b. with a pay.check. (Which is a Very Good Thing), follow the first bullet point below.
    —————————-

2 things that occur to me –

    – go to the university / college you earned your degree at. Many universities have Career Centers, or Career & Professional Development Centers to help graduates enter their fields. Go many times. This will be a new project for you. This is not a one-time 15 minute visit. You will need to learn who you connect with inside the department by meeting several different people several times,
and learn what services they offer that suit you.

    – you say you need a portfolio. Instagram is free and is in your hand right now. Start where you can. You have either a smart phone and editing computer, or you know people who do and you could borrow theirs. You say you have a passion for this, so get passionate and make a variety of short films with a different feel one to the next. Just as you graduated and are trying to get started, so did actors, costume makers, writers, lighting and videographers, and make up artists, etc.

They also need portfolio samples, and will work for free or nearly free, and will have good ideas in their specialties that you won’t think of working on your own. You need to find them and organize this.

If you are specialized in only editing, I don’t know. If you have any other skills then you can just seek a producer or director candidate and help and encourage them to organize this.

If you actually have a passion for this, you need to start somewhere. Music videos for beginning artists, or live performances. Video work for websites, Instagram, and other social media. People pay for this work, so make some videos for businesses or artists or influencers. Put them on your Instagram and link everyone you work with. Then contact website builders, and social media marketers. Also city governments, Chamber of Commerce, Visitors’ Bureaus all need ongoing media work including videos. Something, just get to doing it.

To build your Instagram / portfolio you will work for free, just as I ‘worked for free’ to generate my first body of art work before I could sell some of that art. Once you have a body of work you will have made some connections and learned a bit about the larger world and your capabilities. Somewhere in there you will have your first opportunities for small paid projects.

I’ve been a professional visual artist for 25 years now. It is work, work, work out here. Pursue new contracts; meet new clients and designers; develop new products (I’m a glass blower who specializes in lighting), build and maintain my glassblowing equipment, train and work with different assistants for different jobs; take pictures and video of current work; produce and install work in different environments, etc., etc.

It’s exhausting if you think about a career. So instead think of one project at a time, and get started.

It’s hard to give specific advice, because I don’t really know what you mean by “film degree “. I don’t know if you intend to make feature films, documentaries, animated shorts, commercial work for product, marketing, television. Or do you intend to be a dedicated camera operator, editor, writer, lighting gaffer? Or if you even want to stay in this field. Your post is not clear. You need to get clear on what you want to do. And start by doing one manageable project.

    Best wishes
