Ridiculous that I have to censor my own thoughts to get advice.

Is there anything specific you’d enjoy doing?

So, it’s possible that regular work scenarios aren’t for you. Have you considered doing something radically different?

Here’s a list of jobs that are nothing like retail:
    1) climbing cell towers, windmills, etc tall electric dangerous machinery
    2) helicopter pilot. Most jobs in major cities will hire you just to do the classes
    3) sewage treatment
    4) incineration technician
    5) forklift driver
    6) animal control
    7) Lobster Fisherman

Just go do something really different.

There’s other jobs besides 40 hours 5 days a week.

I work 36 hours 3 days a week in healthcare. So 4 days of the week I’m not at work. I can swap shifts with people so I can group up my work shifts and have a week off, I just visited friends 500 miles away and came back the next day and now I’m chilling at home on because I still don’t have to be in for 30 hours. I recently group up the shifts and used 36 hours of PTO and took 2 weeks off and drove 5000 miles round trip around the country visiting friends and family.

I took a week to go adventure in Colorado because I could before that.

Im a contractor and save up and pick up extra shifts so I can take 2-3 months off between contracts. I went to Burning Man twice.

Life is what you make of it. If you don’t want to do 9-5, you can find a way around it. I have a friend who loves their 9-5, and I have another friend who loves their WFH 9-5. I like my 3 shifts a week, I pick up extra most weeks and then fuck off the rest.

Maybe this isn’t about work. If it’s available to you, a therapist might help. If all kinds of work make you feel miserable, maybe there’s something else that’s taking up space inside, not leaving a lot for work.

Work intermittently, and live frugally? Capitalism is a trap, and we’re all born into it unfortunately. It took me a lot longer in life to realize there’s more to it than career success and extra money to burn. If I could go back, I’d live more frugally (sounds like you’re doing okay with that by living with family) and save more so that when I wanted a break from the rat race, I could do it without risk of financial failure.

Know you’re not alone and try a lot of different work. Maybe you’ll find something less intolerable than eath-day.

Work is just to get paid. You aren’t supposed to enjoy it. Do what makes the most amount of money.

You need to identify what you enjoy doing, then see what you can get out of that. No use maudling.

Your attitude will improve a little when you can pay rent on time.

I used to work 80-120 hour weeks and that sucked. Now I work 40 and it doesn’t seem so bad. Eventually you just get used to it. It’s better than being homeless or broke. Also retail is the bottom of the barrel. Try finding something that engages you more fully and you’ll find the workday passes quickly.
