My first biology professor was a dancer who transition into biology, mainly molecular biology. But all specialize branches of biology initially start the same. From pursuing a Bachelor in Biology, to branching to specialize field such as Neuroscience through a Master/Doctoral program.

edit: Just know, if you’re going through the “research” route of any science field. You’re salary is heavily impact by state and federal grant.

I would start by applying to masters programs in neuroscience. Cold email PIs you’d like to do research with at the schools you’re applying to. Cold email masters admissions (short email) explaining why you want to change career. Otherwise may be weird for them to randomly receive your application with no context. Masters will allow you to work in research. You’ll need PhD to get independent funding and have your own lab

Many universities, especially R1s, do not give second bachelor’s, or only give them for restricted fields so it’ll help to be flexible on that. It narrows the options enough to think about targeting specific programs like Columbia GS or UC Berkeley’s chemistry second bachelor’s.

28 is honestly nothing in biomed, youre fine. i knew a guy who started his phd at 34 after being a paramedic for a decade, now he runs a lab at hopkins. the postbac programs at places like columbia or bryn mawr are literally built for people like you, theyll get you the prereqs without making you redo a whole bachelors

I would research what a career in neuroscience looks like to you (roles, work environments, impact etc) and reach out to people in these roles to learn more about their path. Some may require less specialized education, some more.

What a career in neuroscience looks like to you will help determine what opportunities you might start pursuing.

Edit: how many kinds of businesses/companies are involved in the medical research of the brain? Finding an opportunity with any one of them in any capacity will provide real industry experience as you continue to refine your career focus.

Yes. Go get a bachelors degree in neuroscience. It might take less than four years. But scan sites such as linkedin for people in the field and see their path. Or reach out and talk to them to see what they think.
