Does jobs like that exist?
Yes.
Are they easy and available?
Absolutely not.
Is college-straight-to-job (in the way you are asking) real?
Not anymore, generally speaking.
Does that mean literally everyone is fucked and there’s no jobs for anyone and you should just give up?
….Only if you want the entire world to be that black and white.
Can I list out all the jobs that you are wanting in the non-college-to-job path?
No. I’d have to be God to do that.
Does that mean they don’t exist?
No, they definitely exist and many are screaming for people (but their requirements and processes for getting those people into their open positions may be fucked admittedly, that’s a them problem.)
Are you fucked because of their issues with their processes and advertisement-of-their-job issues and requirements?
No.
Do you need to lie to get past their issues?
No. You need to evaluate your skillset fairly (without putting yourself down) and learn how to pivot them into their jobs, but the rest is on them and whatever screwed-up AI/ATS system they are using. Usually there’s a person, a hirer or recruiter behind it though and they still do look at resumes so there is a chance.
Do you know how to look at jobs open and match them to your skill level and apply with a clear resume?
Probably not. That’s a “you need to learn/solve that” problem.
The mismatches of people’s expectations of jobs and their skillset plus the mismatches of jobs and their ATS and now AI systems are why the market is so damn bad. Funny thing is, before Covid we were SO DAMN CLOSE to getting all our shit sorted! Then the Rich saw, said “that’s a problem”, and fired all the recruiters due to fears of Covid downturning business. Then the promises (but unfulfillment of those promised) of AI screwed it up more. The Hiring System is now worse off overall….but it’s still possible to get through, drips and drops at a time.
Sorry this turned into a bit of a rant….my industry is frustrating at times. Not so much on the people side, I get the resume issues and lack of clarity issues and dejection not helping em….but the hiring side? They got so much more to fix now, most of it still hidden from their eyes! All this to say – don’t think black and white, college-to-job, think “pivotable skillsets” instead!
I can’t give you a perfect answer but I think I can provide some criteria to help in your search.
It’s important to look at management/salary jobs vs worker/hourly jobs. If you’re in a management type job things will come up that require your attention on an irregular schedule. For example if say you’re a grocery store manager and there’s a blackout you’re going to have to get to the store and facilitate keeping things cold or getting rid of products that’ve gone bad. On the flip side in more corporate type jobs either these types of irregular problems it’s possible to find companies that make up for it by letting you work from home and having a more fluid schedule. For example if you do a 10hr day to get a report done they say leave at 2 the next day. Say you’re doing a vacation over the weekend they might let you work from home Friday to make it easier to travel when you’re done.
The biggest issue with these types of jobs is that you’ll be busy and odds are you’re going to be thinking about work while you’re at home.
On the flip side you can pick an hourly/worker type job where the schedule is more rigid but then you punch out it’s over till you go back. You aren’t responsible for big picture things you’re just responsible for doing your task while you’re there. These normally don’t pay as well but there are exceptions. The best exception I can think of is nursing. Nursing pays well and it’d be rare to be required to come in when you’re off. They might ask you too but it’s not exactly required. The big caveat here is they can require you to stay late in certain staffing situations.
The other pro of nursing is you can work 3 12 hour shifts and be considered full time. Yes you lose 3 full days of your week but have a lot more freedom than most jobs. I’m not sure what other jobs give you this type of time outside of work with that level of pay but I think nursing is a good frame of reference for what you’re looking for.
If you go to certain specialties, imo, nursing.
After a few years experience I got to higher end 5 digit salary working the absolute minimum 3 days/36hrs a week on top of missing and not making up some sick days for either myself, wife, or kids. But I was always at the whim of the hospitals scheduling.
Right now I’m close to 6 digits doing only 36 hours a week the same way even with missing sometimes as much as 2 months worth of work days. I take off almost whenever I need to and plan for vacations. If I work only one more day (so 48 hrs a week) I’m very easily into 6 digit territory. But I still like working my minimum. I also set my exact hours and days I want to work. I get my exact routine schedule every week, no contest.
Biggest difference though is I work home health pediatrics now where my job stress is like 1/10 what it used to be working in a down town hospital. Home health, with my current cases, I’m allowed to do whatever to ensure I stay awake and so long as I’m on top of all my work and patients which I always am. So I have so much downtime I can spend hours watching movies and getting paid for it. Even had cases where it was part of the plan for me to sit down and play video games with a bunch of kids for a few hours a day. Have really good relationships with the parents too usually.
The work life balance is great for me and the low amount of work stress and tons of down time make it feel like a crime to get paid as much as I do. I am aware though I found really good cases and many nurses are actually afraid of home health because you’re spending a lot of time in a different neighborhood and someone else’s home. It takes some effort to make sure you have the skills to get to this point and to land cases like these. That being said I only take care of the sickest kids most these companies have.
What do you mean by “where you can manage your time?”
Do you mean you don’t want to have scheduled team meetings, periodical check-ins with your boss, etc? That’s not reasonable in a professional workplace. Even as an auto mechanic, your boss will say “work on that blue Toyota this morning” so you won’t be managing your time.
What do you want your workday to look like? Please don’t say “I want someone to email me an assignment and then leave me alone for 5 days while I work on it.”
