i’ll need an architecture to correct me if i’m wrong, but i’m pretty sure they make darn good money. especially once they progress to a certain stage in their career.

law and architecture are both two great, respectable careers where they pay-out might end up being relatively similar. for instance, an environmental lawyer is not set to make as much as a commercial lawyer the same way an architecture in their early stages won’t make as much as one more established. an architecture might end up making heaps more than an environmental lawyer, etc.

the real question is, when *both* your desired paths are promising -which one could you do for the next 50 years merrily (or somewhat, contently).

going off of what you’ve written, i reckon you should go for architecture. again, someone swoop in and correct me if i’m wrong but if you did your BA/BS in architecture and realized you hated it, could you not go to law school afterwards instead?

You absolutely can study one thing now and the other thing later. IMO, career choices are about finding a balance between four things:
    1. What you’re good at
    2. What you enjoy
    3. What the world needs
    4. What you can earn money from.

This concept is called Ikigai in Japanese. The ultimate goal is to find the path which accomplishes a balance between all of these criteria. You can prioritize one over the other, but ultimately all four are necessary to have a fulfilling and financially stable career.

Law and architecture both require working long hours, maybe 60-80+ hours a week. How much do you value your personal time? Personally I place a lot of emphasis on my work-life balance, and I’m willing to accept a lower salary in exchange for having my evenings and weekends free. Others are laser focused on an early retirement, and are happy to eat, sleep, and breathe work for a decade if it means they can retire at 35 and not have to work the rest of their life. It’s all about your own personal values and what’s important to you.

Try filling out this worksheet about values. Make sure to take all the time you need and don’t rush it. See if it helps give you some clarity: https://www.actmindfully.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/Values_Checklist_-_Russ_Harris.pdf

Civil Engineering is far better than architecture. One of my best friends obtained his masters in architecture at a top notch school and never got a job as an architect. He had several jobs with promises of moving into their architectural department and it never happened.

I had a very successful career as a civil engineer.

If talking about law school, that’s a completely different skill set.

Architect here. Being good at math doesn’t really help with architecture really. Being good with programs and being good at art definitely helps way more. Architecture varies a lot country to country so I can’t speak for wherever you are based in but it’s a decent job here in Denmark. Unions have negotiated decent wages and benefits so even non unionized workplaces have decent work lives. So starting salary is a minimum of 60K USD, 6 weeks holiday, 1 year parental leave with pretty much full pay, work week is 37 hours and over time can be paid out or used in lieu. I really enjoy it and wouldn’t trade it for being a lawyer even though they get paid more as it seems quite dull to me. I did study and work in the UK before and that wasn’t as nice…
