16 Yaşında Meslektaşlarıyla Mezun Oluyor, Kariyer Yolunda Kaybolmuş Hissediyor ve Askerliği Düşünüyor
Hey, 16 yaşındayım ve iki yıl içinde mezun olacağım ve 18’de önlisans derecemi almış olacağım. Dürüst olmak gerekirse, hayatımda ne yapmam gerektiği konusunda kendimi gerçekten kaybolmuş hissediyorum ve rastgele bir iş seçip bunun işe yarayacağını ummak istemiyorum.
Ailem hemşire olmamı istiyor ama bunun bana göre olduğunu düşünmüyorum. Uzun saatler, sıkıcı rutinler ve masa başı işleri bana pek iyi gelmiyor ve bundan keyif aldığımı düşünmüyorum.
Şu anda tek gerçek seçeneğim ordu olabilir gibi geliyor. Teknik veya siber konulara ilgi duyuyorum çünkü zorlayıcı görünüyor ve gerçekten önemli beceriler geliştirebiliyorum. Ama bunun doğru seçim olup olmadığını, ne kadar rekabetçi olduğunu ya da günlük yaşamın gerçekte nasıl olacağını gerçekten bilmiyorum. Ayrıca biraz utangaç ama motive olduğum için aileyle geçireceğim zaman ve uyum sağlayıp sağlayamayacağım konusunda da endişeleniyorum.
Ayrıca küçük bir işletme kurma fikri de hoşuma gidiyor ama önce istikrarlı bir kariyer istiyorum. Bana beceri kazandıracak, beni zorlayacak, iyi para kazandıracak ve yine de biraz özgürlüğe ve aileme zaman ayırmama olanak sağlayacak bir şey istiyorum.

• Gerçek veya somut gelmeyen işler yapmak

• Okul ve üniversite nedeniyle artık her şeyi çözmek zorunda olmak

What?
You don’t want to sit at a desk all day but you want a job in cyber security that sits in front of a desk all day?
For context: I was an enlisted Marine and then officer, served in the Iraq and Afghan Wars, work in logistics now, and I’m a mod of two subs for questions about joining the military, r/MilitaryFAQ and r/USMCBoot. I’m not into trying to pressure folks into joining, I’m not on commission, but I enjoy helping people considering service to make an informed decision.
I guess the top thing I’d say is you absolutely want to spend a couple weeks reading up on the military, because if you decide to join, confidence in your decision is a key factor.
I would say that figuring out if service in general is for you, and if so which of the six branches, is more challenging than choosing a job. Don’t get me wrong, job choice is important and impactful, but that’s just more concrete “what activities I could enjoy doing” as opposed to joining at all which is a huge lifestyle decision. It’s the military, there are a lot of compromises involved, and while currently we’re relatively at peace, you would be signing up to risk your life as called on. But in return the military provides great benefits, unique experiences, and the chance to break into a whole new environment.
So far as “fit”, the military is way more diverse than people assume. Like I was a Marine in a combat unit, and it certainly wasn’t 100% jocks and rednecks (though it is a little more than average). It’s less about being loud or quiet, and really the fundamental skill is just being able to knuckle down and get the job done with your team. It’s persistence, resilience, determination that matter more than muscles.
If you’re interested in pursuing this, another key point of advice is “assume nothing.” Civilians have all kind of odd ideas about the military. This goes for job stuff too: don’t *assume* military job X is the best way to civilian job Y, no matter how blatantly obvious it seems. There are six branches, most of those have dozens and dozens of possible entry-level jobs, I think Army has like 150+.
So far as the “interesting work” part: a lot of folks will argue “choose a transferable job”, but I and many others would say just pick whatever you’d enjoy. Tons of folks drove a tank for the Army and they’re now accountants or electrical engineers; your military career doesn’t rule your whole life.
If you serve 3+ years and get an Honorable discharge, you rate the GI Bill, which pays for college or trade school, including the MHA monthly living allowance. So you could spend the next four years out sailing on a small Coast Guard ship and maintaining their engines or cooking the crew meals, and get out and get your degree in Applied Robotics and start a whole new career. Or if you want tech stuff, the military has plenty of that. It’s up to you.
It is absolutely not for everyone, but it is certainly a career option worth exploring.
Start with a good career assessment. All these wants you wish for can be sorted or nearly sorted out. I would start there, and go with 3 or 4 top options to do a bit more research. There so many career options out there that you don’t always hear about.
