Well if self-sufficiency is your goal, id start with getting your license. Unless you live in a major metropolitan area that has reliable public transportation, not being able to drive is going to hurt your job prospects.
I know many employers ask about how you plan on getting to work everyday (especially in areas like retail and food), so if they are asking and you’re telling them that you have to rely on your parents then it may be turning them off from wanting to hire you.
After that…well idk. What do you *want* to do career wise? Have you brainstormed some career options that seem to align with your personality? Have you done any general job searching in your area to see whats even available to start working towards?
If you have an associate’s in CS, it’s not going to be of much use in the field anyway; apply those credits for transfer to get a bachelor’s degree in another field.
Associates degrees only hold value if it’s for something like nursing.
A computer science associates doesn’t mean anything, it’s meant to be transferred to a university for a bachelors.
You can learn to drive by going to a driving school. This is better than being taught by a relative as you will learn how to do it properly. Check on Google maps for one near you. You can call them and ask them how they do it, like for example, do they provide a car to learn with, and what it would cost. Also ask what sort of support do they provide for taking the drivers license test.
In addition to taking driving lessons, you will want to practice driving on your own. Or rather, “on your own” but with someone else in the car with you. Empty parking lots are a great place to begin doing this. I hope your parents still have a car so you can do this. If not, maybe you can sign up for additional practice driving sessions.
There is no reason to hate yourself for going in a few wrong directions for starting your career. You learned some valuable lessons about what you like doing and what you don’t like doing. That is worth a lot.
You might consider taking some classes towards a 2-year Associates degree at a local community college. Usually, a state sponsored community college is not terribly expensive. The one near me offers academic counseling, which will help you figure out what career you might like for yourself. I usually recommend something that offers sure employment, such as Computer Aided Drafting, or Accounting. [Here is an example.](https://daytonastate.smartcatalogiq.com/en/2025-2026/college-catalog/program-guides/a-s-certificate/autocad-foundations-engineering-a-s-certificate) Here is [an example of another local community college program.](https://www.fvtc.edu/program/engineering-technologies/mechanical-design/31-606-3/mechanical-cad-drafting#estimatedcost). Here is an [example of an Accounting program.](https://www.ivytech.edu/programs/all-academic-programs/school-of-business-logistics-supply-chain/accounting/) All schools will work with you to find financing for you, if you think that might be a challenge or barrier for you.
Meanwhile, as you think about these things, and after you’ve learned to drive, consider getting a job. It can be any job. Even if end up not liking it, you will have learned something from that experience.
