I can relate except for the “I don’t like the tech field in general”. I changed majors to Information Sciences and now I’m making 6-figures. Not easy to do probably these days, but sure beats a physical labor job.

Yep I was the same as you, and when I was a freshman last year I was studying Computer Science and I just kept failing math over and over like twice basically. Plus I was not very impressed with the people trying to work in the CS fields but either getting ghosted or no jobs at all. I’m doing a different college major now since it is easier on what I want to do with my career now. I’m majoring in Broadcast journalism with a minor in business concentrating on accounting and finance.

If I were you bro, I would switch majors from Computer engineering to maybe accounting or finance since both of those give you good paying careers, and the math in those fields are not as insane as Computer Science or Computer Engineering. Also you won’t have to worry about programming since even programming for a lot of people was hard and even I had a hard time with it at times.

I feel for you. I also have a Computer Engineering degree. I graduated and got a job for a while, but it didn’t pan out. I’m honestly trying to figure out a new path at this point. I know it’s not the most endearing background for responding to your post, but I do feel like I could offer you some helpful advice.

Before I suggest any major things, let me give you some advice that I think can help you on your path so far.

For studying, I suggest just doing as much practice as you can. Do what you think helps you retain what you learn from the practice. Like writing notes, or maybe working on a project. Treat it like a passion, which means doing it a lot. That’s generally what a lot of the great programmers in this field do, imo.

I don’t know what languages you’re working with, but LeetCode and HackerRank are good sources of practice material. And if there are concepts you are struggling with, definitely consider looking up some relevant tutorials. Go back to basics if you have to. It can help to start from the beginning and rebuild your knowledge. Sometimes it’s something really basic we failed to grasp when we first learned it that makes people struggle with more advanced concepts that build on it.

Now, for the more drastic advice. Don’t make this decision lightly. Think about it for a while. Talk to others, especially friends and family. Express your issues; simply talking them through with others can help you sort out your thoughts. This could easily just be a low point before an excellent career. So be careful.

Fields related to programming or computer engineering are highly competitive. There are many people applying for each job. Part of why I’m leaving this career is that I haven’t been able to compete with other candidates for many jobs (plus, among other things, I’m not great at interviews). If it isn’t your passion and you’re really struggling, it really might be in your best interests to consider doing something else. It’s not your fault, and you aren’t less for it. Talk to your advisor about your issues. Maybe they will have other suggestions, or maybe you might need to consider pivoting to another career. Take note of what you like or dislike about this. If you have an idea about what you would like instead, take note of that as well.

Most of all, though, don’t just take my advice. Definitely look at what others are posting here. I hope you can figure this out.

CS is NOT an easy field. It is a field that expects accumulative knowledge and independent research. I wish I knew that before I dared to placate my parents instead of move out at 18.

If you want to continue this field, this requires you to be self-motivated and willing to study outside the classroom, learn frameworks on your own, and literally devote your life to the major like a religion.

Be honest, are you willing to do this? Employers are either too greedy to train people from scratch or just don’t have the finances for it. This is the time we live in.

It’s sad, our youth is being sold a lie and only ending with more debt…
