I wouldn’t overlook AT&T as a career option. One of the wealthiest people I know (personally) started in a lower level position at AT&T, worked it while going to night school for finance, and retired an executive. They own several houses across the US and travels regularly. Retired before 60. If you look at AT&T’s career page, they have a lot of cool career pathways. And sales isn’t anything to overlook as a financially good job either. You’re retail now, but get into business development or B2B, and you could make a lot of money.

Joining the military will not guarantee the life you want. Pay while in is really pretty low. The GI Bill is good, but you are gonna go through a lot of stress to get these benefits. The military can be a good stepping stone, but don’t do it if you have other options are only doing it for the benefits. I don’t think many say the benefits were worth some of the things they had to go through to get it.

Electrician is a good career. But it is laborious and can be tough. Running your own business is also not easy. You’ll likely have a lot of competition. Most companies find the “big money” is not in residential, and going for the big commercial or government jobs means you need to win the work against your competition. Which, guess what, means you end back up in sales and business development.

Was in your same shoes, I went military. AT&T corporate was literally my last gig before joining the military and since then has been a tremendous experience which is why I’m doing the 20 years to retire and should be 44 when I do.

Get what you want out of it and get out, some people just do a three year contract and get out with the maximum benefits!

    I joined Army.

I was in the military (Army). Best opportunity I ever had and I even went to college. You could potentially start earning a pension at 45ish if you do 20 years, which would mean a lot for financial security. You could use a VA loan to buy your property at the best interest rate and without having to make a down payment. You could also go from Army to an IBEW apprenticeship through the VEEP program after your first contract, but with all the military benefits as well. There’s other similar maybe better trade programs just for veterans you can get into because of your Air Force experience. I know a guy who did a lineman program while transitioning out of the Army, he’s making those lineman big bucks (and working those crazy lineman hours) now. If you decide you want to be a business owner later in life, there’s support for veterans doing that too, especially if you want to be a DoD contractor and especially especially if you leave with a disability rating (all too common these days.) The only reason I would say not to do the Air Force is if you literally can’t, which is certainly the case for a lot of people out there unfortunately. Very simply, you could be in a special IBEW apprenticeship just for veterans whenever you get out AND you’d have veteran benefits. Why would you do the IBEW apprenticeship now instead of the Air Force when you could have all that and more? The time value of for example not having to make a down payment on a home, and paying a lower interest rate would probably end up being more than the pay cut you would be taking for the 4 years you were in the Air Force, especially if you were married and getting BAH. I dunno crunch the numbers

I mean it’s a kind of a no brainer. The military actually comes with an IBEW apprenticeship when you get out, the IBEW apprenticeship on the other hand does not come with military benefits. That’s easy math.

Speaking of time value of money, remember to contribute at least 5% to your TSP (Military retirement account) so you get the full 5% match from the DoD.
