It’s a big conflict of interest. I only take on local clients (web/marketing/SEO) and have a certain mile radius for competing businesses.
This is *exactly* the kind of conflict of interest that gets brushed under the rug until it blows up.
I include **geo-lockdown clauses** in every client contract. If I’m working with a business in a specific area, especially in a cutthroat niche like personal injury, I won’t work with a direct competitor within that same geo unless the client approves it OR pays for exclusive rights.
Why? Because anything less is just cashing two checks to fight yourself.
I’ve written about this before: some agencies make a business out of pitting clients against each other in the same 5 to 10 mile radius. It’s a churn machine. They copy-paste strategies, recycle content, and dilute results while pretending it’s all “fair play.” In reality, it’s a race to the bottom and I’d be LIVID if I were the client realizing this later.
And here’s the truth: if you tell two Mexican restaurants “I’ll do my best for both,” you’re lying to at least one of them.
Local SEO is a zero-sum game in many ways. Only one can be in the 3-pack. Only one gets the click. You can’t ethically split loyalty when there’s a clear winner and loser.
If you want to build a long-term reputation in your area, protect your clients from competition. Don’t create it.
That’s how you win referrals, not short-term retainers.
