I’ve been brought on board to work on redesigned websites and I see many common mistakes, but if I had to pick one mistake I see the most often it would be image SEO or lack of it. Not a properly optimised image, no alt text, description and not lazy loaded or lazy loaded in the hero section.
Schema
Using HTML headings for styling, instead of content structure. Headings reflect how the contet is organized, CSS controls how they look. Idk if this is the most common mistake, but it’s a pet peeve of mine 😬
One mistake we see quite often is treating the redesign as a fresh start for content. The team updates the layout, simplifies the navigation and rewrites pages to sound sharper, but accidentally removes the very information that helped those pages rank.
For example, a service page might have ranked well because it answered specific customer questions, explained the process and covered related use cases. In the redesign, all of that gets replaced with a sleek headline, a short paragraph and a CTA. The page looks better, but Google has less context to work with, and visitors have fewer reasons to trust the business.
We’d crawl the existing site before redesigning it and record each important page’s rankings, organic traffic, backlinks and key content. Then we’d compare the old and new versions before launch, not just check redirects afterwards.
A redesign should improve the user experience without throwing away the SEO equity the old site took years to build.
Don’t rely on automated crawls to find problems. While they can catch technical errors, you really need a human to go through the site to find missing content, correct internal links, reconnect topic clusters, and other migration issues that can damage SEO.
