Any legitimate agency/ SEO freelancer will bow out gracefully and professionally.
How well do you rank at the moment?
Not common at all but when I started I did have one agency remove a clients backlinks when they left. Safe to say I prefer some agency owners more than others.
It’s not common but also not impossible.
It’s your business so I’d do everything I could to protect it, so removing their access before hand if you didn’t trust them may be a good idea.
Also, before telling them you’re leaving, I’d strongly recommend that you get a list from them of all of the logins for all of the back link sites they should have been building for you.
No, not really. A good website ranking is testimonial for them. Unless they are freelancers from third-world countries, can’t say anything about them.
Doubt it. It would hurt their company’s reputation.
How is your relationship with the SEO company? That usually gives you the answer.
SEO companies lose clients, it’s part of the business. The good ones handle it professionally, often leaving the door open for clients to return when finances or circumstances change.
That said, it’s wise to protect yourself. Make sure you have:
* Primary access to your website hosting and domain
* Admin access to GA4 and Search Console (nice to keep the history intact)
* Primary owner status on your Google Business Profile (this is crucial, if you are the business owner regardless of canceling a contract you should maintain this)
Most agencies have an offboarding process, which usually means relinquishing control of the account**s** or cooperating with whoever takes over, not literally handing back credentials.
If you have admin access and plan to bring in another agency, a trustworthy SEO company can remain in the account temporarily to help transfer access and onboard new members. If you’re not especially tech-savvy, this can make the transition less stressful. The important thing is that *you* always keep admin-level control on everything, your domain, hosting, Google Business Profile, GA4, and Search Console. That way you can add or remove others as needed.
To directly answer your question, I haven’t seen it as a common practice for SEO companies to mess with or sabotage someone’s site. That said, we’ve had a couple clients come to us because it did happen. The damage their old agency caused was pretty detrimental, but honestly it’s been rewarding pulling them out of that hole. Now they’re not just recovered, they’re performing and expanding tremendously compared to where they started with us.
I doubt it, but if you’re in doubt, just remove access and that’s it. You can leave stats since they can’t do much as long as you are the admin. But I doubt they will do anything, it’s a bit suicidal.
