Search results are dependant on location and a user’s previous search history amongst many other things. I wouldn’t trust what any of them say. I’ve had 2 IPs visit a website and see Google Analytics tell me that hundreds of users had been on my website.
All of these services are giving an estimate on stats, none of them are reliable. Weirdly, they used to seem very reliable and easy to use yet have been repeatedly *improved* to the point of barely being useful.
You should read about Google’s personalization of results.
SEMRush is a snapshot in time based off a proxy that searches the keyword.
Search Console is the average position over the selected period of time.
For additional clarification: rankings aren’t static for various reasons, therefore, neither will be 100% accurate.
Sometimes I’ll export data from both and compare the data together in Excel to get a clearer picture.
I use ahref for looking at exact keywords and how I rank globally. However, for more localized search terms like “contractor near me” you are going to want to look at google search console data. I find using both is extremely important and helpful. I would never just drop down to using one.
I tend to use GSC for clicks since that is more accurate but since the GSC position lacks detail (like is it 1 because it’s in the AIO or is it actually 1 or organic or in the featured snippet) I use rank trackers. Plus, you can track specific keywords in them that you are working on. For me the biggest thing is checking the “last updated” column in whatever tool because they’re often outdated. While it’s true results are personalized based on location and previous history, most of my clients are very much focused on first touch attribution, and people who are seeing the search for the first time and getting an unpersonalized result. Ranks change all the time though and are becoming harder to compare with all of the features so I try to steer them more towards traffic and bottom of the funnel results.
