If you have no quality agency/person near you just hire someone who knows what they are doing. It’s as simple as that.
As for the budget, well it entirely depends.
I would advise against hiring someone if you don’t have enough of a positive cashflow. The general rule of thumb, your SEO+copywriting budget ( on a retainer basis ) should be ~5-10% of your revenue per month.
the only advantage of hiring local is they might have connections with other sites in the area and related niches to use for backlinks.
Rankings come from authority. authority comes from backlinks. Local rankings come from backlinks that are relevant to your niche or geographic region. Whoever can get you those links is your best bet, doesnt matter if theyre local or not.
It’s hard to find a good local SEO guy in smaller markets. Like I run a web agency and my SEO guy I use for all my clients is in Pennsylvania. Finding “local” guys like that are great. By local I mean small time. Not large companies that hire hundreds of people. You’ll be nothing but a number and get minimal attention you want the one on one attention that a local expert can bring and actually have their number to call for help. Not a phone tree hitting 1 for support and not getting an answer
As for pricing, good SEO can start at about $700 a month. Aggressive and heavy work can be as much as $1200-$2k a month for a small business. I think $3k a month or under $700 is a scam if you’re a small business. There are big businesses that pay $5k-$10k a month but they’re national and have to spend that. Ranking in one local market shouldn’t be $3k a month.
And SEO is not just “optimize 3 keywords, optimize meta tags and deceptions, alt tags, and submit to google search console and installing yoast”. It’s active work creating location specific service pages to rank for specific keywords in specific locations, backlinks every month, even blog posting and guest posting on other blogs. Blogging alone is not SEO. So if any company is charging for SEO and not creating location pages or backlinks every months and just doing 1-2 blog posts a month, that’s not SEO. And you shouldn’t hire them. Find someone who’s a small team that can do all the things I mentioned and have case studies of their work to show off.
