You always want to come up first for your buyers, so yes, it’s worth doing. Good SEO efforts will last, so over time it should bring you higher-profile projects.
Immediate ROI can be measured in lead quality, which will be high if you work with the right people. Increased brand awareness can be proven in the short term too (3-6 months).
Talk to people in your industry to see who they use and trust. Whoever they recommend will have experience in your sector. Cost really depends on how much or how little you want to do, but don’t go with a low ball agency, just like you won’t always go with the lowest bidder for your projects, at least where it matters. Bottom tier pricing will yield low to no results.
Don’t cold-call agencies. It will take longer, but the industry referrals will land you with the right people. One of my clients got scammed hard by an Australian agency, not saying they’re all like this, but you won’t end up with someone like them if you go the referral route. Most good ones will work on retainer and show where hours are spent each month in a clear, provable way. Ask to see a sample of regular reporting for other clients.
I’m local in QLD and have been in SEO here (and NZ before that) for well over a decade, so I’ll give you a bit of a run down how it is.
**1. Will SEO benefit you?**
Yes. Even if you’re not chasing daily leads, showing up for your niche gives you credibility. Large clients still Google, and if your site looks invisible, it reflects badly.
**2. How do you work out ROI?**
Harder for low-traffic B2B than e-commerce. But your project values are high, so even one new tender, shortlist, or connection pays back multiples of the likely cost.
**3. What does it cost?**
Depends on site size, competition, and scope. For real work (not offshore “packages”), it’s tough to get results locally for less than ~$1.5k/month. That’s a baseline for city-level work; national is more.
**4. How do you choose someone?**
Avoid agencies with a big sales force or who outsource everything. Look for someone who:
* can walk you through your site in detail, not buzzwords
* explains how they plan, manage updates, and measure success
* gives realistic timelines instead of guarantees
* reports clearly and answers questions without fluff
* understands compliance (WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility, Gov Style Manual for content, Privacy Act 1988, ISO 27001 for security, etc.), AI and outsourcing overseas is often a breach for these standards
* can handle dev/content/sysadmin/design in-house, or at least integrate well with yours
Buying an upfront proper audit (not an automated software one) or having them screen-share through your site is a good filter. You’ll see quickly if they know their stuff. It’s a lot like construction, people with real experience can drill down to the nuts and bolts, the rest just wave around buzzwords and broad statements.
Yes, SEO can benefit your B2B construction business in Australia by enhancing online visibility and attracting high value clients. SEO costs in Australia varies per month depending on the scope and competitiveness of your industry.
