I use the ahrefs api with codex. I’m quite happy with it. Also use SparkToro for audience data. Between these two and screaming frog, we can get pretty darn surgical in the gap.
I’ve heard Semrush is better for paid ads, but I haven’t used it. I have a handful of clients running $10/day for local services. Frankly, what’s another $100 if you’re managing significant ads for a client? What I’m doing doesn’t warrant it.
I prefer Semrush. Been using it for 12+ years.
Others will say Ahrefs.
They are both great. If you are already using Semrush, there really is no reason to switch. You’ll just waste time learning a new tool.
I doubt you need more than the free plans at this point. skip the aeo stuff, fake data.
Work out what you need/problems then pick the best solution for it. Both offer a lot but could offer a lot of features you don’t need. You can try Ahrefs like you said for a month or two and see which suits better. I’m using Semrush and it does what I need it to do but I’m sure Ahrefs is just as good.
For keyword research, competitor research, and content optimisation, Semrush. Ahrefs for audits and monitoring. Basically, Semrush gives better keyword data and has better tools.

I don’t know. And to make things even hard i discover another one. SE Ranking
my partner uses both ahrefs and mangools

What do you think you need it for the most? That might help you get a semi-decent answer.
Subjective and vague questions will give you subjective, vague answers?
Ahrefs by far. SemRush is solid but was acquired by Adobe so be warned using SemRush moving forward.
You have almost nothing indexed and almost nothing ranking. That is the bottleneck, not the tool. Switching from Semrush to Ahrefs will not change either of those.
Before you buy anything, open Search Console and read the Pages report. If most of the site sits at Discovered, currently not indexed or Crawled, currently not indexed, you have a content and internal linking problem, and no keyword tool fixes that. The fix is fewer and better pages, each linked from somewhere real, and a sitemap that only lists what actually exists.
Once you have pages that can rank, the split the others described is right. Semrush for keyword and competitor data, Ahrefs if audits and backlink monitoring are what you actually use day to day. For a site your size, the free tier on either plus Search Console will cover you for months.
Also worth saying since it came up above: the AEO and GEO add ons are thin on real data right now. Do not pay extra for them.
Test Ahrefs for a month: Since your Semrush subscription is already ending, buying Ahrefs for a single month is a low-risk way to directly compare their keyword databases, backlink data, and site audits for your specific site
Both tools are top notch its just which does the work tou exactly want to get out of a tool
Used both. Honestly they’re close enough that it mostly comes down to which interface you like. Ahrefs is usually stronger on backlink data and feels cleaner to use, Semrush is broader if you also do PPC, local or content marketing. On the cheapest plans, check the limits before you buy though. Ahrefs Lite caps things like projects and how much data you can pull, and that’s where people get annoyed after a month.
But with very few pages indexed and almost nothing ranking in the top 5, I don’t think either tool is your bottleneck right now. Your problem is indexing and page quality, and Search Console tells you more about that than any paid tool. Look at Page indexing for why pages aren’t indexed, then Performance for pages sitting on page 2-3 that are worth improving. For your own site’s backlinks and a basic audit, Ahrefs’ free plan for verified sites covers a lot.
If you need keyword research for new content, one month of Ahrefs is fine. Just plan what you’ll research before you start the month so you’re not paying to browse.
Ahrefs, no doubt really.

On the AI visibility bit, I’ve been tracking around 90 prompts in Semrush across ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Overviews for a client. The prompt level data is usable, the visibility score sitting on top of it isn’t. The score moves without the underlying answers changing at all.
Ahrefs doesn’t have a real equivalent yet, so that’s not a reason to switch either way.
Agree with the point above though, if almost nothing is indexed, neither tool is your problem right now.
Semrush works best for me. It’s probably the best tool out there for keyword analysis and research…that’s my primary requirement too. But several of my friends do swear by Ahrefs too. So, I guess to each their own.!!
I prefer Semrush for backlink audits, and competitor analysis, and Ahrefs for keyword tracking and technical audits. No real preference overall. I use both.
People don’t want to hear it but pay for both
