    I’d do:

    1. Find a family member I can crash with (paying small rent), or a roommate in a basement-type housing.
    2. Apply for low-income housing in the meantime, if possible.
    3. Figure out how to teach English online (make money faster than coding course).
    4. DM small businesses anywhere in the country, ask if you can improve their website to make side money.
    5. Look for any non-profit or even religious establishments locally that can help from food, transport, to getting jobs, etc.
    6. Go to the library often for mental health and communities.

    Good luck!

Medical coding/billing is extremely saturated and a course does not guarantee a job.

Apts will want 3x rent as income and usually a credit history. Without that, probably a room rental. Job wise, customer service/call center is the only realistic option. If there is a legitimate health concern that stops you from working, disability is the route you have to take. 30k won’t sustain for long and if you do get a call center job, they are closer to minimum wage so you’ll eat into your savings pretty quickly.

You could get grant money for school if you don’t have income. The $30-40k may cut that amount but you can always appeal.

Rural South Dakota. Buy into someplace like Midland.

You will be 1 hour from a doctor, dentist or any healthcare. Driving would be mandatory. If you wanted to work you better be able to handle a farm job.

But could get a functional house for very little (10-20k)

If you speak more than 1 language, the best job you can get WFH is a translator. Hospitals need them, courts need them, all kinds of places need them.

If you go to Kirsten Dirksen’s YouTube channel, she produces a series on people who live in unconventional houses. Most of these homes are multi-million dollar situations. But one recent episode detailed this guy who went around asking landowners if he could live on their land in exchange for helping maintain it – he found a couple who would let him live on their land for $100 a year, and he would do tree trimming and such for free. He started in a teepee and eventually built an A-frame tiny house from scrap wood. He lives very simply, but he basically doesn’t need to work a full time job.

If you can’t work, I doubt you are physically able to log a land owner’s land for them…But maybe there is some skill you have that someone would appreciate which you can barter lodging for.

Otherwise, seems like you will have to do a roommate situation! Go ahead and get some sort part time work. Maybe you can do in-person solo work (like restocking at night, or lab tech work or something) if you have to avoid other people due to health issues.

Can you handle remote customer service work? There are many avenues to take if you’re willing to do that – medical scheduling, bill payments, etc.

Definitely would depend why one cannot work in the office. But I would probably think about roles that would let me be an entrepreneur and trained toward that: if it’s not like an immune disorder, you could become a nail tech, a dog groomer, etc. Maybe study accounting and become a CPA (my grandfather did this back in the old 1900s and worked from home for 30 years).

WFH jobs are not extremely rare. This is all dependent on your area. You may not immediately get a WFH job but it’s not rare ESPECIALLY if you’re doing medical coding and billing.

    Yes it’s saturated…healthcare is saturated..so what? You’ll easily find a job.

If you don’t need to work from home and can at-least sit in an office..there are a lot of other certifications you can get for a little less and in a lot less time.

WFH jobs are now extremely rare (I think like 12% in 2023 before all the RTO policies) and if entry level work can be done fully remotely, the jobs will like be outsourced to countries where labor is cheapest so unless you live in one of those places it may be hard to get a remote job without experience. Since you can’t work due to medical reasons (assuming you have verification of this from a physician) maybe you can get disability? I know that requirements are different in different countries but that might be your best option. 30-40K won’t go very far in a lot of places.
