Üniversite yıllarımı boşa harcadım.
23 yaşındayım ve kimya alanında lisans derecesine sahibim. Ve dürüstçe zamanımı boşa harcadığımı hissediyorum ve bu şimdiye kadar yaptığım en kötü hataydı.
Şu anda küçük bir API (Pharma) tesisinde kalite kontrol kimyager olarak çalışıyorum. Bu işi 1. günden beri çalışmaktan nefret ettim ama bir süre sonra buna alışacağımı düşündüm. Ama neredeyse bir yıl geçti ve bu işle ilgili duygularım değişmedi. Çalışma, SOP’ların çok katı takip etmesini, denetimleri ele almayı ve hatalar için çok küçük bir alana sahip, çünkü en küçük hatalar bile düzeltmek için karmaşık. Çalışma aynı zamanda dönen vardiyalarda çalışmamı ve haftada 6 gün (haftada 48-56 saat) çalışmamı gerektiriyor. Ve bunun üzerine, deneyimli insanlar için bile ücret oldukça düşük.
Dürüst olmak gerekirse sadece bir fabrika ortamında çalışmayı bırakmak istiyorum. Dönen vardiyalarda çalışmaktan nefret ediyorum. Her hafta vardiyaları değiştirmek zorunda kalmadan tek bir vardiya çalışmayı tercih ederim. Ve WFH şansı yok (çünkü laboratuvar çalışması). Ofis işlerini düşünüyordum, ama onlar hakkında bir fikrim yok. Özellikle hiçbir şeyle ilgilenmiyorum veya tutkulu değilim. Her zaman yetkin oldum, ama kariyerim hakkında çok kaybolmuş hissediyorum ve bu yolu seçerek başarısız olduğumu ve potansiyelimi boşa harcadığımı hissediyorum. Bu yazı bir rant gibi hissediyorsa özür dilerim.

My answer to this is always to check out the insurance industry. Search for life sciences underwriter jobs (or life sciences underwriter associate to get your foot in the door). Your background will likely give you an advantage in that specific role. There’s much to do in the insurance industry though so maybe check it out.
Edit: Chubb, Travelers, Hartford, Hanover, are all good companies to start with/check out especially for life sciences insurance programs. Make sure you go directly to their websites.

I am a 47 yr old with a chemistry degree, and like you, I hated the lab. I went into quality in pharma and got laid off by infamous stopping of the Cell & Gene Therapy world. I’d give you advice, but I’ve tried pivoting to teaching, and Im considering a degree in accounting and leveraging supply chain skills. I see how bad the economy is there too!

Honestly, landing an industry job right out of college is pretty lucky. It sounds like a rough job, but years of experience in industry is the largest factor in getting a better job. Once you’re in, you’re in kind of situation.
It’s a rough time in general in terms of life sciences with all the bullshit going on with the current administration, but it’s not hopeless. I would highly recommend starting to apply to other jobs in industry as with 1 year of experience you will be competitive as long as you have good references.
A thing to remember is that just because you hate your job, doesn’t mean you necessarily hate the work. QC is an entry level, grunt work type position, so as you move up you will have more fun/relevant work to be doing.
Even with just bachelors it is feasible to eventually reach the “scientist” title that a lot PhDs will start at. This comes with a pretty respectable salary and the longer you work for any one company, the better your schedule/time off will look.
I am at a similar spot in life, though in an acedemic lab. The work is definitely more fun, I am very involved in experimental design as we are a small lab. The only issue is the pay, as $19 an hour in a city where I pay 1200 a month for rent does not stretch far.
And with all this said, it’s also perfectly reasonable for you to completely change directions. A bachelors, particular in chemistry as it requires a good amount of intelligence, is quite useful and will get your foot in the door for a lot of non science jobs.
