try sales, lots of talking, less numbers. can pay well if you’re good. bartending’s decent too, but unpredictable hours.

I was/am in your same position. Went to school for analytics, ended up in accounting/finance, and (finally) got an offer to move into a project management role. I also realized I don’t like “behind the scenes” work, and that I wanted a more social position.

The good news is that accounting is the language of business, so you have a good perspective on any field, which makes you a valuable candidate.

    Some suggestions:
    – Sales: pays better than bartending a lot of the time. AI cannot replace sales people. If you want to ever go out on your own, you’re gonna have to know how to sell. Very people & relationship focused. (My end goal). Your finance/accounting background gives you a good leg up because you’re able to communicate value in a financial sense to customers

    – project management: social in the sense of you’re working with lots of departments, coordinating people, and interacting with customers. Your finance/accounting background is good because you’ll better be able to understand the company wide impact of your project(s)

    – FP&A: I pivoted to this for a brief period, although I disliked it more than accounting. Felt like way more spreadsheet work. Lots of people suggest this though, so just throwing it out.

In your position, I would shoot for sales. Less spreadsheets, less admin work, etc. you’re building relationships with people. It also pays a lot if you’re good. $70k is not an unobtainable income goal if you’re selling the right project/in the right market/put in the work. Some cons of sales is that it’s very results driven & you are constantly measured for your performance.

Biggest thing that I’ve told myself while in your situation is that this experience is not a loss. You’ve gained valuable knowledge, even if the work itself is not engaging for you. Take that knowledge and transfer it to something you would enjoy doing.

My friend went to work for the state bank examiner. I forget what it’s called. Sounds like a pretty good job.

I make 75k bartending 4 shifts a week sometimes 3. But you’ll have a hard time getting a bar job with no experience. Try to get a serving job first and move up. Servers also can make good money. But dealing with the public will kill your soul so be aware 😂
