    Can you define “nice paying”?

    Police and fire fighter academy.

For all other nice paying positions without much education, those people usually have the unique skill set and will not be asking these questions.

Maybe should consider heading down to your Army or Air Force recruiter.

Nice pay comes from things that are either

    1. Difficult and expensive to learn- medicine, law, etc

    2. Inconvenient, unglamorous, or dangerous- oil field work, water treatment, mining, merchant mariners

    3. Artificially gated by credential, as well as requiring hard study- RN and Physical Therapy are an example of this; both require legitimate study, but PT especially has increased its wages over the last decades by raising the degree requirement to make it harder to enter the field.

You can look in to trades, merchant marine, or wildland fire and see lots of examples of things that will pay fairly well after a relatively short period of study, if you stick with them. It’s also possible to stay at the bottom forever. Wildland fire is a good example of the extremes; as a Paramedic on fires I make $800 a day when I’m deployed in fire season. But there’s also guys who never advance beyond basic ditch digging and after 5 years in are pretty sad about their pay. Aside from me being a Paramedic, he and I sit on the same credentials.

Same with trades. You can become an apprentice electrician and work your way up to Journeyman, start doing commercial, and start making good money. Or you can also wind up like my brother who doesn’t really want to have to work hard; he’s in HVAC and just skims along with maintenance work a few days a week. He gets by but he’s not getting rich.

If you don’t want a long course of study and you want job security, look in to something at least semi-physical and something not many people want to do. The more dynamic it is, will also make it harder to automate, which is really the risk for young adults entering the work force now. What were once things every parent pushed their kids in to, are now high competition, high turnover fields with extremely few entry level positions. Nice pay doesn’t always mean sustainable.
