Business is the go-to default major if you’re just going for a college degree with no direction.

It’s the single most popular major, roughly 13% of all college degrees

I’d suggest going into accounting. A business degree is often too general and you don’t end up with much specialized knowledge that you can show a recruiter, hey this is what I can do in this specific field. Accounting majors still learn business concepts as most schools require them to. But it gives you a very specific route which is what you want to get from college. You want to be able to say I went to college to get this specific job. Not I went to college to get a general degree so maybe I can do these jobs.

Only if your program offers enough accounting courses for you to sit for the CPA. Try that instead.

If you don’t have some kind of experience the major won’t mean much. Whatever you do try to get any kind of experience beforehand.

My wife has a BBA. She went for it because she didnt have any idea of what to pursue given her entry results matching with the pre-requisites, not too interested in full fledged accounting/audit/econs or general social sciences. She wasnt particularly ambitious either. Her starting job was credit control in client management of some corporations. That became her career for the next 10years.
Similiarly, you might not have the clearest idea of what to pursue or the future job market. Get a professional degree if you have the means. It is not useless. It will be handy.

I feel like, at least over here in Europe, every office-, corpo- kinda job requires studying finance or economics or business, so I guess it’s definitely not bad. A lot of competition for sure though.

I would argue no. Its OK for rich kids with no actual ambition or academic ability, but for the average person piling on student debt hell no. Economics is way better for example. Or even Finance. But a general waffle degree? No not with debt. In evening uni and no debt – yes can be of value if you need a degree to tick a box.

I suggest look at way more valuable technical training, eg lift engineering as most are over 50 and shortages. Get money coming in, can do a part time or night school degree to top it up and help unskilled to be a manager later or own a small business.
