No.
I was in the middle of an attempted career change when I was laid off early last year. Now I can’t find a job in either field. I have to essentially start over and not even Dollar Tree is even considering hiring people in my position.
I’m happy
Yes to both. Also, 34 is not really mid-life.
No, I am not experiencing much happiness. I am 46 now. Left a longtime corporate account executive job when i was 37 seeking fulfillment with self employment. My personal life with my kids was good other than the poor decisions i made in choice of girlfriends that would wreak havoc in our lives.
For me, it was my soul that i began to hear. That’s how I personally perceive it, for me. I am quite sure others have different perspectives for these times of midlife crisis and questioning our human experience through what we call our lives.
My own path has gotten weird, dark, and isolating since i jumped deeply into it. Yet i know this is the way to truly knowing myself. And from there, i can offer and do what i feel i am here to do. I am committed to freedom of what i call self.
I know that many people are happy with their lives and careers because that’s what people are programmed to do in this system. Yet i also know that many people also experience their own form of happiness in their life and career in authentic ways.
Midlife questioning can hit at any time. It’s when we begin to step away from group think and societal expectations, that our real lives can begin. When you know, you know. But if you don’t, then you will argue against this statement.
It sounds like you’re about to begin the greatest adventure of your life. To know thyself.
If you ask me on a regular day, I wouldn’t say that I’m unhappy.
But I have bouts where I’m extremely depressed and struggle to fulfill my obligations. In general, I just feel unfulfilled in life and it builds up more and more.
I think I’m going to leave my career in corporate early and find a more people/care-oriented career, even if I have to take a pay cut. The thing I value most is helping people so tasks simply to support already-large companies make money feel tedious and annoying to me.
Career yes personal life no
I (36) am generally happy (on weekends for sure + most days). I don’t make much money (yet!), but I do what I love now.
But I also have had the experience of hating my previous jobs. At that time, I had to separate: do I really hate my job, or my boss, or the (inevitable) situation that I was in.
Pin pointing it made me feel like I could do something about my misery. At least there is a game plan on how to tackle my occasional ‘crying-in-the-car’, if you know what I mean lol.
What part about your job makes you scream inside?
And, are you unhappy just about your career or also other parts of life?
Your gut is telling you something needs to change. It doesn’t need to be a massive lifestyle shift, but keep checking in with yourself to figure out what exactly you want out of life and how you can make that happen. We are not on this earth to just go to work. That can’t be our main source of fulfillment. What makes you feel alive? What stories do you want to be able to tell one day? Chase that.
Yes, pretty much happy. One thing could be going better career-wise, but otherwise life is good.
