In high school, I had a passion for music and thought that music was what I would go on to study. Then, like you, I wised up and realized I wasn’t talented enough to compete for the few orchestra spots that would be available and I would probably end up teaching music. I knew that wasn’t for me. I also knew that I was too squeamish for anything to do with medicine. And although I thought I could be a good teacher, I figured I wouldn’t get the pay I wanted to live the kind of life I imagined for myself.

I looked at what I had a talent for, or an aptitude for (music was already ruled out.) I had kept up with my advanced math, and with encouragement from my father, decided to give engineering a try. I knew it would provide me a solid career, and if for some reason I couldn’t cut it, well then I could pivot to some other field, like business administration or accounting.

So I enrolled in college to study engineering. I picked electrical engineering solely because it was the second highest paid major after chemical engineering (I HATED chemistry). But as it turned out, I didn’t do well with Physics, either, so electrical engineering, which was mostly math, turned out best for me.

I found that studying engineering was very hard for me. My grades were pretty average (I was a solid C student) and I even got a D in two classes, and repeated one of my Calculus classes. Like you, I wanted a job that would allow me to earn good money, so I persisted. In the end, I was able to find a job even with my average grades. Here’s a tip: your grades don’t matter that much, and they don’t matter at all once you get past that first job. The secret of engineering school is to just stick with it.

I think any of the four major engineering disciplines (mechanical, electrical, chemical, and civil/structural) is a great career to get into and they all have a solid future.

Just started my first week of school. I went with undecided as my major for now. I’m in a science class and I’ve realized I am really, really interested in the science field, so while I don’t know exactly what I want to major in, I’m gaining an understanding.

Take a bunch of different classes while you’re doing your gen eds to get a feel for what you may be interested in. Hell I’m even taking a dance class lmao, so if you’re interested in art I’m sure you can take an art class for your fine arts credit, and your work will really improve.

I do want to say I am 21, so I’m a little older than you and my situation might be a little different, but going to college really seems to be growing/forming me as a person, so maybe just worry about taking care of your gen eds the first year. You’ll grown and learn more about yourself. I’m a completely different person now than I was fresh out of high school.

Lastly, my advice would be to maybe take a gap year if you’re really, really uncertain if you want to go to college in general. If you’re just worried about what to major in, but know you want to go, then just send it. College isn’t cheap as I’m sure you know lol, so if you’re not sure if you want to attend at all, it’s totally fine taking some time off. If I went to school straight out of hs I would have failed so fucking miserably because I was an idiot.

Oh also I’m not sure if every school is like this, but you should have a week-two week grace period to drop your classes after starting school, and you won’t have to pay for them. So maybe sign up for a bunch of classes and attend for the first week to see if it’s for you. Good luck!

Speech Pathologist? It is healthcare adjacent. If your music has involved voice work or breath work, you might already have some basic skills/knowledge.

Landscape design? Industrial design? Interior design? If you were seriously considering nursing, you must have decent math & science skills. Art & science often pair well together. Build things that work, but also look good!

Also, remember that for every musician or artist that gets famous there are hundereds of other people working behind the scenes in that industry to keep things running smoothly. I live in suburban Minneapolis and know multiple people who work in the music industry in some fashion. Double major in business/accounting/marketing and art or music. Aim for internships and work with a company connected to art or music.
