SAME WITH NURSING. I always see “just become a nurse you’ll never be out of a job” yeah there’s a reason why. Nurses have some of the highest rates of burnout and turnover. You have to be okay with doing things that most people aren’t okay with. You need to be highly empathetic and have a high level of endurance. Also, the pay is dependent on the area. It’s not always high, at least not as a new grad.

That’s why a lot of engineering schools have “weed-out” classes that you have to pass in order to get a degree. If you can’t pass Calc 2 and Diff Eq, you may want to reconsider becoming an engineer. That was the case at my university, but I know not all schools are equal.

you also see people saying that they sent 1000s of CVs and they cannot get a job. That’s what happens when you make people do something they were not meant for. The ones who are talented and like the field will eventually get the job. The ones who aren’t will eventually leave, after wasting years and a lot of money. That’s also why most countries out there have aptitude tests and entrance exams. But I think even the SAT is optional in my universities.

I think about stuff like this all the time. Suppose there’s a company with 100 workers and 3 managers. It’s literally impossible for those 100 people to all work their way up the ladder

Agreed, but I hope you’re referring to real engineering, not “software engineering”, which is such a BS term. I’m a developer myself with a CS bachelors – we are NOT engineers.

Just commenting because I see this argument usually for “software engineering”, because it’s not real engineering and it’s so much easier in comparison

Most Engineers don’t even make that much money—only specific niche fields in tech. There are blue-collar folks that make more than I do.

I absolutely agree with you, learn coding get rich thing fits this criteria as well, if your only motivation is money you wont really succeed in coding jobs

Same with coding/tech. Not everyone is good at or interested in coding. I tried to learn to code, and I just didn’t get it and found it painfully boring. I’m bad at math so all the “learn engineering!” posts aren’t helpful either.

Legacy Engineers pretty much stay in low 6 figures. It’s the Tech related Engineers that have the highest earning potential but that field is fierce and oversaturated especially as AI infringes on those roles.

I dropped Engineering back in College in favor of Business. And there are loads of Business non-sales roles that span from low 6 figures to 200k+.

As one who graduated in 1989 with a degree in mechanical engineering, you really, really have to have SOME level of interest in engineering if you are going to commit to a degree and a career in it. It isn’t necessary to have your entire life, mind, identity and existence dominated by engineering (mine most certainly was not and is not,) but if you don’t have some kind of curiosity or interest in the field you plan to go into, committing to a degree in it is not a good idea. My freshman class started with over 100, but fewer than 30 actually graduated.

If you want to pursue a career in engineering without a degree in it, that ship has sailed. There was a time during the peak of the Maker-Hacker craze that people could binge-watch Mythbusters, get a subscription to Make Magazine, then proclaim themselves “Self-Taught Engineers” and actually get paid as such. Employers are going to be a bit pickier these days.

But if you really want to pursue engineering out for personal reasons and not because you heard it was stable or lucrative, you should really do so. If it’s really what you wanted to do, things will work themselves out.
