Dont waste time with useless degrees. You dont want more debt and a minimun wage job post graduation.

Stop listening to your mom and go to your community colleges career counselor or a student advisor. They can give you a career assessment or just talk with you about your goals and what you want to do based on your skills. When you’re getting ready to graduate, they can help you get your resume and cover letters together as you start looking for a job.

Consider the career choice not as the main focus, but as a means to an end, like earning enough money to be able to invest in a stock portfolio. I invested in stocks that pay dividends, but. Instead of just taking the dividend payments, they are reinvested in more shares. Hopefully over time they will snowball. You’re young enough that by the time you retire, you will want for nothing.

Do you still feel an engineering degree would be too hard now that you’re older?

Nobody’s ‘passion’ is business, they choose business because they want to get rich. Business is a scam major that colleges use to milk tuition money out of students, don’t study ‘business’. You should have a moderately successful middle-class career before you even think about getting an MBA.

If you are interested in Zoology you will need some sort of specialized degree or credential for working with exotic animals. But the job market for this sort of niche stuff is BAD. Low wages, and very hard to find work. You don’t choose this line of work, this line of work chooses you. Everyone likes watching reels of cool animals, but working with them is a whole different beast.

Archeology/History can hardly be considered a line of work, there are virtually no jobs and most digs rely on un-paid student labor. History is a rapidly dying field.

Nobody is going to hire you as a construction manager if you don’t have experience working in construction. If that’s what you want to do, then it’s time to start applying to apprenticeships and grind it out as a journeyman for 5-10 years. Then, maybe, just maybe someone will consider you for a management role.

It’s rough out there, and the job search will humble you. You may need to scale down your expectations. And remember, you hobbies don’t need to be your career. “Follow you passion” is terrible career advice.

You are 25, you are an adult, your mom shouldn’t even be part of this discussion. The fact you are letting other people tell you what to pursue is probably another part why you feel lost.

I found O*NET Online very helpful. It identifies your interests and strengths and then lines them up with careers. I looked at the list of matches, wrote down my top 10, and then did research to find out what kind of education I needed and how to get said job. Buy career books that explain the different jobs in fields you are interested in, what a day in those jobs look like, and how to get there.

Get a degree because you have a goal in mind, as in a what, a where, a why, and a how. Otherwise you are just wasting your time and her money. You say you want to pursue a degree in construction management, or degree in Zoology or Archaeology, but for what purpose? You can read up on those topics at the library if you enjoy them, why major in it? What job do you intend to get with it? Does that job even require that degree? Is there any demand for that job? Go on Indeed right now and type in what role you want. What degree and level of experience is required to get the job? Is the pay worth the degree?

I think you are on the right track, but you need to do more research, give it some more thought, and set a clear goal. You are just going to keep spinning your wheels until you do so. A degree is a waste of time unless you know what you will do with it.

I’d probs rule out business if you already know it doesn’t excite you as it’s way too generic to justify unless you’re super into the job path it leads to. If Archaeology or Zoology keeps popping up in your feed and you’ve liked it since ninth grade, that’s a clue. Maybe you can look into environmental science, wildlife conservation, or even museum studies, those can be broader and more job-flexible than straight archaeology.

And since you’re stuck on what to major in or what direction to take, the GradSimple newsletter might be helpful. You can see interviews with grads about how they made those decisions and how things played out. It’s really helpful if you want to see what worked (or didn’t) for other people!
