There’s a field of research called Digital Humanities that uses CS skills to analyze, interpret, and share research. If you have an interest in psychology, look at how people are using digital tools in that field. Then, you could apply for a psychology degree and explain how your CS background gives you the ability to do innovative effective research. Good luck- I hope you move onward to do things you love!

wait ur kidding right ? germany is like the easiest place to get a degree. even if the second one requires a higher NC there are waiting semesters , theres also the option of just straight up paying your way into a college, which isnt impossible considering you are probably well compensated for a tech job. theres also the option to just straight up study in austria, where you dont require an nc but an entry test instead. theres also online college, or just studying it as a minor next to an easy to get into degree and then switching. Like in Germany there is no ironclad system to force you into your first major, even if they would really like you to believe that is the case.

Psych degrees have effectively zero ROI unless you follow through to a master’s. If you’re interested in that field, I would just follow it as a hobbyist unless you’re ready to take on some student loan burden.

I have zero understanding of the economic climate or job market in Germany, so I could be speaking out of turn here, but in the US college costs are astronomical which makes me hesitant to burn my whole life down and start over. If you’re really unhappy in the CS field, there are plenty of options that wouldn’t require a total overhaul or another degree. You could swap to IT and dominate the field with just a teensy bit of basic automation, or try to get into medical tech if you would rather be closer to healthcare (and if you know even just a little bit about Linux, which is what a lot of machines run on, you will be top of the food chain very quickly in that subfield in particular).

CS/coding jobs are super hostile in general (and relative to other workplaces in fields like humanities, physical labor, etc) and the industry really treats people like numbers. IT is much more personable, especially at MSP’s which really sell business relationships and consulting/troubleshooting more than anything else. If you’re not feeling the inhumanity of CS, I don’t blame you – it’s why I (personally) picked IT over coding when I had the option.

Try to avoid remote work, imho it is a lot more “free” in the sense that your days are yours, but in-office helps to compartmentalize the work in a way that creates a clear division and stops the work from invading your personal life.

If you want to do music, and I mean if you REALLY want to do music, then just know you will spend most of your life exceptionally poor. I used to gig full-time, and I probably made ~$900 USD per month. Not only that, but I made that little as a trad saxophone player in New Orleans – if people are struggling in the places you are meant to succeed, then the only other option would be selling your music online, which is so congested that you would need a miracle to get noticed on a platform like YT. Not saying it’s impossible, but unless you are willing to throw everything in your life to the wind to pursue it, it’s going to be a burn so slow that you’ll die before a flame catches.

Good luck, DM if you want some advice for swapping to IT.
