there is more to it: you dont get to choose your genetics. Whether you come out strong or weak, smart or dumb, ugly or a top model. second, you dont get to choose your family.

I don’t want to diminish anyone’s achievements, but that is the general consensus. A lot of people will claim it is 100% their own gumption, but realistically we’re all beholden to luck. Some people get royally screwed over for no reason at all – born into shitty circumstances, raised to be ill-equipped to deal with the world, saddled with mental or physical illness. Getting randomly laid-off, screwed over, thrown out by a crappy slumlord. The list goes on (…which is why I always find it disgusting people demonize the homeless, drug-addled, or otherwise downtrodden. Not everyone gets to be born into a charmed life, shockingly… Moreover not everyone copes with it well).
That being said, there is no reason to go all ‘doom-and-gloom’ and ‘everything is pointless’. Good luck, bad luck. There is still room to try regardless, and nothing is predetermined. It is basically just making the best out of what you’re given.
Luck is chance meeting opportunity is a good definition but I agree with OP, luck is very lopsided with how you use it. In reality, it is luck defined as countless failure meeting endless effort
I think that most “luck” is actually effort and discipline in disguise.
The ultimate luck is having parents who make sure you read books, do your homework, join clubs or sports, etc. They raise you to be a happy, smart, confident, hard-working person.
Then, you will strangely have the “luck” to get good grades, get into a good college, get an interesting internship, all of which will give you the “luck” of landing an interesting and profitable career.
Luck is absolutely a factor, but life is not ‘based’ on luck.
Showing up on time for work every day, pushing for more responsibility, making yourself valuable DOES get you promotions and opens opportunities. Luck might have it happen in 1 day, 3 weeks, 3 years, but persistence increases those odds.
So yeah, to a large extent, good choices, hard (and smart) work, proactivity MAKES your own luck.
Even with all that stuff, it is possible that bad luck will derail you, but odds of ‘success’ can be pretty high.
Luck and choices.
People that ignore the choices aspect are trying to cope with their own bad choices.
People that ignore the luck side are trying to cope with their own impostor syndrome or similar affliction related to success vs. feeling of deservedness.
It’s true that luck plays a role in your success, but that doesn’t mean you have no chance to be successful just because you did poorly in college. College is only 4 years of your life.
The question is how you respond to the cards you’ve been dealt. Do you just give up since you sucked for 4 years? Or do you find a new path for yourself?
The latter is what makes people successful.
It’s about taking chances. You can call it luck, and sometimes it’s as simple as that. However, it’s better to increase the number of chances you get by giving your best and networking, and to take them because most chances won’t come twice.
