Büyük ölçüde işe yaramaz bir dereceyle mezun olmamıza üç aydan az bir süre kaldı. Staj yok, ilgili deneyim yok, üniversitede iyi bir not ortalaması elde etmekten başka bir şey yapmadı. Bu durumdan en iyi şekilde nasıl yararlanabilirim?
Kampüsteki kariyer fuarına gittikten sonra çıldırıyordum ama kimseyle konuşamayacak kadar korkuyordum.
21 neredeyse 22F orta düzey bir ABD devlet üniversitesinden gazetecilik alanında lisans derecesiyle mezun oluyor (gülmeyin). Bu bölümü seçtim çünkü daha iyi bir fikrim yoktu, liseyi salgınla meşgul olarak ve akıl hastası olarak geçirdim. Diplomamı aldıktan birkaç yıl sonra, yüksek baskı ortamı, hızlı tempo, stres ve düşük ücret nedeniyle iyi bir gazeteci olmaya uzaktan da olsa yetmediğimi fark ettim. Ancak o zamana kadar geç mezun olmadan derecemi değiştirmek için artık çok geçti.
Her zaman güçlü bir öğrenci oldum ve magna veya summa cum laude’den mezun olma yolundayım. Ama temelde benim için yapabileceÄŸim tek ÅŸey bu. Ãœniversitede iki yarı zamanlı iÅŸim oldu (bir fast food, bir konaklama) ve staj yapmadım. Gönüllülük yok, hatta ders dışı etkinlikler bile yok. Dürüst olmak gerekirse sadece kendimi hayatta tutmaya çalışıyordum ama iÅŸe alım görevlisi için bunun bir anlamı yok, deÄŸil mi?
Akıl hastalığım ve yurt dışında geçirdiğim bir yıl, üniversite deneyimimi tüketti ve şimdi mezuniyetime yaklaşıyorum ve kesinlikle dehşete düştüm. Tek duyduğum piyasanın ne kadar berbat olduğu ve gazetecilik ve medya işlerinin nasıl tamamen berbat olduğu.
Ailemin yanına bile taşınamıyorum çünkü yakın gelecekte uzun süreli seyahat ediyorlar. Hak ettiğimden çok daha fazla maddi yardımda bulunuyorlar, dolayısıyla öğrenci borcum yok çok şükür. Ama çok korkuyorum. Arabaya bağımlı olduğum şehirde arabam yok, bu yüzden boktan bir yüksek lisans ilk işi bile bulamadığım için kendimi şanssız hissediyorum. Yapmaya yetkili olduğum hiçbir şey aklıma gelmiyor.
Olumsuzluk duvarı için özür dilerim hahaha. Ama temel olarak şimdi hangi yöne gideceğim??? Ne tür işlere başvurabilirim? Görünüşe göre giriş seviyesi işler için bile yeterli değilim.

I try to look at job postings as the absolute ideal candidate the company wants and… that person doesn’t exist. Everyone wants someone with experience, someone they don’t have to train. This is not realistic for entry-level jobs.
Have you thought about marketing? I work as a Marketing Generalist for a midsize professional services firm and I do a lot of writing… along with proposals, website, social media, etc. I didn’t know how to do any of these things when I started, but I learned pretty quickly. Another idea is Proposal Specialist. Many industries hire people solely to work on proposals and your journalism degree would work here. This can sometimes be a high-pressure environment, so it might not be a great fit for you.
Keep in mind:
1. Nothing is forever.
Just remember, you are just starting out and whatever path you take, you will learn and grow from it. I started off in sales, then moved to client services/project management, then admin/HR, and am now in marketing. Everything I learned in my current role helped me to prep and stretch for my next one.
2. Make connections with people, not just recruiters and job postings.
I don’t have any advice about the job market right now. It seems kind of lousy out there. I will say that after a few entry-level jobs I started to find my next role by making connections with people – people I worked with or knew personally who recommended me for a role.
Do your parents, parents friends, or family members work in an industry you might be interested in? Even if they are in a role that’s not a great fit for you, you can always ask them for a referral for someone you could talk to. Ask for a quick 15 minute informational interview where you ask the questions. This is a zero threat ask – you’re not asking for a job – and it would give you an opportunity to learn about an industry.
3. Volunteer your time and find an organization that will help you learn and grow.
Even though I’m quite happy in my current position, I joined an organization (every industry has one) so I can network and make connections with other marketers. I’m an active member and volunteer my time. I have a feeling I will source my next job through this group of people.
You have a lot going for you and an entire lifetime to figure things out.
