The tech market has been and will probably continue to be very challenging. It’s been that way since 2023. So it’s not just you and it’s not your fault. The timing is just unfortunate.

Feeling helpless will lead to depression, so you need to create some momentum in your life. If you want to stick with tech, now is a great time to go back to school. Get a Masters or PhD. Or do something new. Education is a great way to better your chances in the long run and also to get into a different environment. Take out student loans if you have to.

You have to be very deliberate about your choices. Antidepressants aren’t very effective and they come with lots of adverse effects. Instead, force yourself to hike or run 30 minutes every day, which is [just as effective](https://www.npr.org/2026/01/12/nx-s1-5667599/exercise-is-as-effective-as-medication-in-treating-depression-study-finds). Therapy is good as it gives you more social contact. Reach out to old friends. Get up every morning, work (school applications, or whatever) on your laptop in a coffee shop, and don’t come home until the evening.

It’s hard, but there is a path.

Any interest in a health occupation? I became a certified nursing assistant and took care of the sick and the elderly for a while. Demand was high.

That sounds exhausting, no joke. I had a stretch that went almost a year too – just applying, hearing nothing, and watching the gap get bigger, like some kind of bad joke. I hit a point where even opening LinkedIn made my chest tight, so I get it. The worst is when everyone acts like it’s just about pushing harder, meanwhile you’re maxed out and nothing happens.

Random, but what kind of tech roles are you targeting? Sometimes the job title itself makes all the difference; I started tinkering with the keywords in my applications and it kinda changed the game. Also I ran my resume through those ATS tools (tried ResumeJudge, Resume Worded, and SkillSyncer) and you wouldn’t believe how much stuff was going straight to junk before a real person even saw it. Not saying it’s a magic bullet, but at least figuring out what gets you through those dumb robots helped me understand why stuff wasn’t working.

You’re not alone. And even if it feels like you’re shouting into the void, getting the right nudge or a perspective swap does help sometimes. Which city are you based in? Some places have more of those networking events that are less soul-draining than the big job fairs. Gaps don’t define you as much as it feels, even though I know that’s not comforting right now.
