Beşeri bilimler derecesi sahipleri sizi şaşırttı?

Neye indiğinizi ve ana dalınızdan ne kadar farklı olduğunu merak ediyorum.

I know someone who is a pretty accomplished data engineer as a history major. He was also in a leadership role at a FAANG company for a while. He didn’t do the “learn to code” thing either, just kinda stumbled into it as his career progressed and he took on progressive responsibilities at work. This is one reason I always tell people to look for jobs that have a little slice of what they want to be doing, his whole career leading up to this point was a series of smaller pivots based on projects and tasks from his last job. You don’t need to literally have the title software engineer to do software engineer things.

It may not be abundantly clear right now, but the critical thinking that you get in liberal arts degrees, in the humanities, will be far more important than many other degrees. AI will be doing many aspects of business. But not critical thinking. You don’t get that in an accounting degree.

I’ve been loving seeing the circle complete and come back around over the past quarter century on this. It’s comforting seeing these cycles and patterns over time. History major class of 2005. I’m a manager in tech in a technical area. Hate it but I make a bunch of money, which is the only reason I work, so I might as well do something that pays well.

The truth is no majors really truly prepare folks for the real world. At least certainly not the corporate life. Even engineering and cs honestly. A lot of stuff can just be picked up at your local library with a curious mind, time, and effort. Engineers don’t like hearing that but it’s true so tough shit. It’s all just a big game anyway, and however you manage to play and get someone to pay you without breaking any laws or doing anything unethical, is the correct way. Whether that involves a major or degree or not.

Sociology – started with healthcare credentialing and transitioned to a HR manager now at a healthcare organization. It’s surprising to me because I didn’t think I would end up in HR but I did.

The only thing a humanities degree is good for, is landing a job at Starbucks.
