I started my own business, and life got a lot more unpredictable but way more fulfilling. The stress didn’t vanish, but the meaning behind what I do now makes it easier to handle. It’s not for everyone, but breaking free made me feel alive again.

I live in dull suburbs because my life is in the house – wife, kids, doing wife and kid things, doing family things, etc. Burbs gives me the space for that and the access to the job that pays for these things. Without the wife and kids there is no way that I would stay here – absent a family, I would rather have a small space in a place where my life happens outside of the home.

Personally, I spent my twenties doing my best to be a touring musician and to drink myself to death. Came up a bit short on both fronts – wish I had quit drinking earlier but I’m very happy I had a lot of adventures when I was young and content now to live a conventional domestic life.

The most fun job in vet medicine is a certified canine rehabilitation practitioner, CCRP. You can get the credential if you are a veterinarian, a licensed vet tech or strangely a human physical therapist or certified PT assistant. A PT assistant is the quickest and cheapest way to qualify. The CCRP course is notoriously very challenging, I’ve known of vets who were cocky and failed it.

A CCRP is like a PT for dogs. If you’ve ever seen the underwater treadmill thing, that therapy is actually so much more precise than you’d ever have guessed, they measure the pet’s muscles and try to achieve symmetry or desired growth with very precise prescribed exercises. It’s administered by a CCRP.

The job itself is awesome because 1. You’re getting only A+ clients and don’t have to deal with the most frustrating part of vet medicine which is non-compliance with ideal standards of care (usually due to cost). 2. It’s so satisfying to see the pets and families get relief when the pet builds natural pain relief from stability (they’re also the only people qualified to be fitting prosthetics on pets, no other credential qualifies someone to do that, not even a DVM). 3. The whole procedure is basically getting a dog to follow a treat or toy. Whereas most vet offices the pets are scared and stressed and not feeling well, in rehab they have to be willing to do the exercises so the best method is always lure-and-reward. It’s sooo fun. You basically cheer for old or post-op dogs all day.
