Is more control, good? Yes! Is this default block implementation good? No…
Cloudflare users’ websites will now have reduced visibility in LLMs by default, and minimal warning. Is this really what most of their users want?
The supposition that interfering with LLMs’ ability to train and/or use your content to answer questions, will help produce quality content and win back users to your website via search, is unproven.
I hope they implemented a simple way to deactivate this. I’m working in e-commerce and everybody is trying to get their shit into LLMs right now.
I think of this kinda like toll roads…
If you control access to 20% of the roads in an area and place a toll on them, sure some will use those where it makes sense, or where they have to, but many will just avoid them or create new ones.
And there will even be services that then allow you to map your route without tolls with only minor inconveniences.
Sure maybe other road owners decide to join and that becomes stronger but more likely perhaps other road owners will find other ways to benefit from their new found traffic. I like cloudflare and cheer for them but not seeing it working out long term.
Most of our sites are routed through CloudFlare. You have the option to allow or disallow. I like it
But I want my website crawled in the hope it will send even a little bit of traffic…
It’s more annoying as a cloudflare user that I’m learning about it first from reddit…
