Radiology technologists are the ones who literally take the picture. AI cant replace that. You cant use AI to go into a patients room in a hospital, place a camera behind their back, and aim the xyray gun to take a chest xray.

Dont overthink it. Radiologists may be replaced, but the technicians are fine.

As a PTA, NOT physical therapy!!!! It destroyed my body, the money generally sucks and there’s little room for advancement or ability to switch to non-clinical roles. I wish I did rad tech.

No one ever thinks is RT and it’s crazy to me. Instead of rad tech, I went RT because social media and tech people pivoting out (like me) are flooding rad/sonography for whatever reason and waitlist are insane. Look into it!!

Rad tech and sonography are extremely competitive to get into. Waitlist could be years in a lot of places so keep that in mind.

Respiratory therapy. If I had to go to school again I would do that.

I wouldn’t rule out radiologic technology or sonography solely because of AI. There’s a big difference between AI interpreting medical images and actually performing the procedures. Technologists still need to position patients, operate equipment, obtain quality images, and adapt to different clinical situations. Those hands-on responsibilities are much harder to automate.

I’d also recommend looking into respiratory therapy if you haven’t already! It’s another healthcare career involving direct patient care, technical skills, and clinical judgment.

One thing I’d keep in mind is that there probably isn’t a healthcare career that checks every box. Programs with strong earning potential and job security often have competitive admissions or demanding coursework. I’d focus on finding a career you genuinely enjoy rather than choosing solely based on the possibility of AI replacing it.

I’d also compare actual job postings in the areas where you want to live, since demand can vary significantly by location.

Medical Laboratory Technology. It is not competitive and there are lots of available jobs. AI cannot do maintenance on the lab equipment and troubleshoot issues so it is not in danger of being replaced by AI

I’d absolutely argue that Rad tech programs are much more academically difficult than nursing programs. Rad tech is hard science, nursing is soft science. You have hard science prerequisites for nursing and those can be difficult, but when people talk about how difficult nursing school can be, they are usually not talking about the actual content of nursing school. The amount of busy work in nursing school isn’t difficult, it just takes up gobs and gobs of time. It’s also unyielding, in my program you could only miss a single class per semester and zero clinical days, or else you got immediately dismissed from the program. A classmate of mine got pregnant during the program, missed 2 days of classes because she also got the flu, and was dismissed the next day. Didn’t miss a test, quiz, clinical hours, nothing important.

I have a bachelor’s in biology and couldn’t believe how little science there was in nursing school when I did my ABSN.

Also, where do you live where there’s not a need for surgical techs???? There is ALWAYS a need for ST’s, almost everywhere in the country. Unless you live in a super rural area this seems crazy.

Surgical tech is actually a great gig if youre interested in it. And rad tech is probably more AI resistant than you think. They will still need humans to get people on the scanner, position them for the imaging and take the actual image

I do NOT recommend dental hygiene unless you want to cripple your body and cry from stress daily. Do nursing

I wouldn’t consider nursing academically challenging and would suggest you look into further if you’re interested in it.

However I would also not advise you go into nursing just because it’s safe from AI. Please don’t get into healthcare if you can’t even pretend to care about strangers.

Neither rads tech or sonographer will be outsourced. AI might get decent at interpretation, but it can’t perform the scan

Echo sonography in particular is an extremely skilled and well compensated position with huge demand right now. Could make 6 figures at the right place.

Med lab tech. They can automate parts of the lab but I challenge them to automate an entire blood bank during a massive transfusion when a surgeon keeps changing orders and making you irradiated platelets, then wash units of blood, break them down, and thaw plasma at the same time. The AI bot would break down. 🤣

You will have a hard time getting a decent RN job with an associates degree. Most jobs still hiring ADN are like SNFs and LTC

Look into Histotechnology. If you would like laboratory work. There is no patient contact.
