get the loan. Go into something you want to do.

Being a burnt-out doctor who doesn’t want to practice medicine doesn’t help you or your patients.

maybe they can compromise on something like biomedical engineering or robotics.

Arrange for career testing at a local University etc. Ask the counsellor to help you explain your preferences to your family.

or…delve into Ellis’ book “Becoming a Master Student” (Amazon) and become *the* competition in the classroom. Apply for every scholarship you can and break away from family financial support.

Try to find scholarships. Or tell them that you will go to med school after you get your mechanical engineering degree and then completely just go and get a job and live on your own. Make the argument that you can go to med school with any bachelors degree. If they don’t want you to major in engineering, go to community college and get the pre requisites and then transfer to a state school to get the least amount of debt as possible. You should not do medical school if you hate it.

Spend the first year taking your general classes. Take calc and bio and see how you do. Even in engineering I needed chemistry….

Get the first year paid off. Do great at school and figure stuff out. You need a backup if you don’t get into medical school anyway so maybe engineering with the right stuff to apply for med school?

Ok. I am very confused here. Are you sure you did your research? This is in the US right?

Because we are talking about an undergrad degree here. You can’t attend med school without an undergrad and your undergrad has nothing to do with med school. You can pick any undergrad degree as long as you did the prerequisite courses for med school.

I have worked with many doctors with all sorts of undergrad degrees; communication, computer science, and yes engineering. So you can get your engineering degree with a minor in biology to be med school ready.

I don’t see a problem and if your parents are doctors they should know this. You can just tell them your undergrad degree is your backup.

Lastly, you should tell your parents that it is a better idea to have a degree in engineering for pre-med. I have worked in many university hospitals, engineering and computer science residents have told me they got accepted easier because they stood out from a sea of biology/chemistry majors. Lol
