Teknolojiden Yaratıcı Alana Geçiş
Bir sonraki adımımı bulmaya çalışan 27 yaşında “yeni” bir mühendislik mezunuyum ve açıkçası şu anda kendimi oldukça karmaşık hissediyorum.
Çocukken hep çizerdim ve eskiz yapardım. Animatör, çizgi roman çizeri/yazarı olmak, hatta filmler için pratik sahne dekorları üzerinde çalışmak istiyordum. Ama büyürken sürekli “meteliksiz sanatçı” lafını duydum" uyarı. Mesaj hep aynıydı:
"Sanatta para yok. Mühendisliğe girin. Gerçek parayı mühendisler kazanır."
Ben de dinledim.
Beni uçurumun kenarına iten şey, çizgi romanları ve Tony Stark ya da Batman gibi inanılmaz şeyler inşa eden mühendisler olan dahiler gibi karakterleri sevmemdi. Bu bana “mühendisliğin” ne olduğuna dair çok spesifik bir imaj kazandırdı." olması gerekiyordu ve tüm yumurtalarımı o sepete koydum.
İleri saralım: Mezun oldum. Ve teknoloji dünyasının gerçekliği hayal ettiğimden çok farklı görünüyor. İşten çıkarmalar, işe alımların dondurulması ve yeni mezun olarak işe girmenin zorluğu (yaklaşık iki yıldır buradayım) arasında kendimi sıkışmış ve hayal kırıklığına uğramış hissediyorum. Lisansüstü eğitimden iki yıl sonra hala alanımda iş bulmada sorun yaşıyor olmam da açıkçası yardımcı olmuyor…
Ancak son zamanlarda çizgi roman sanatını yeniden öğrenmeye ve film yapımcılığı ve içerik yaratmaya doğru genişlemeye başladım.
İyi hissettiriyor… ama aynı zamanda bir yanım da var (muhtemelen sahtekarlık sendromu kısmı), sanki yıllarımı yanılsama içinde olduğum bir alana tamamen adamak için harcadığımı ve kendime başlangıçta sevdiğim yaratıcı yönde düzgün bir şekilde eğitim almak veya büyümek için yeterli zamanı asla vermediğimi hissettiriyor.
Bir gecede başarı ya da fantastik bir kaçış beklemiyorum. İnsanlar yemek yemeli ve faturaları ödemelidir. Sadece burada herhangi birinin teknik veya “güvenli” bir durumdan geçiş yapıp yapmadığını bilmek istiyorum." Alanı yaratıcı bir alana dönüştürün, ikisini de dengeleyin ya da bu duyguyla baş ederek yolunuzun bir yanılgı üzerine kurulduğunu fark edin.

Dude, I’m going through the same thing as you, and honestly, I think you should make that transition. Let me explain: I’m finishing college (I’m studying CS and I only have one semester left) and I’ve already been fired twice. Besides that, I haven’t been able to find another job for several months.
Because of this, I started having several anxiety attacks, which only improved when I decided to revive an old dream of selling art commissions, and, to my surprise, it has been working. I won’t lie, i can only do this because my reality allows me to survive selling a few pieces of art a month. Still, the personal demands and the looks from others weigh heavily and can wear you down, but even so, I don’t regret the choice I made.
What I can tell you is that it’s okay to change professions after graduating. It’s more common than it seems. And don’t think you wasted your time, and think about how your education can help you in this new stage of life, use it to your advantage and reinvent yourself 🙂
Kind of. I majored in business admin/marketing and transitioned into graphic design. But I ended up choosing GD adjacent roles because they paid more. I’m now in a spot where im able to spend around 30% of my time creating and the other parts doing change management/training development/project management. I feel pretty fulfilled, I feel if I was in a full creative role I would not only be paid less but also creatively drained because companies do suck the soul out of creative roles. It took me several years to break into the industry, I got a UI/design certification and started a design stretch/temp role at my current company and used that as leverage to get a full time role. Beware creative roles are very competitive and many companies do contractors instead of FTE
Worlds super complicated right now, I’m going to be in a similar position since I’m about graduate in CS in 1 semester. I’m super scared and embarrassed since my cousins in healthcare found jobs in 2 weeks. I’m over here wondering if I should join the army lol…
Anyways, I personally DJ and found success just putting my work out there and sharing it with friends and family and got paid a bit to do gigs. I’d say keep art as a hobby that you keep pushing publicly and once something catches see if you can capitalize on it and use that momentum to turn it into a career. In the meantime try to utilize that degree to find income or adjacent job that will help fund it.
Stop beating yourself up over things you did in the past. What you did is what you did.
The problem isn’t being good but being seen by decision makers at major publishers. At most conventions, there will usually be a person willing to give a review or critique.
You made the right choice, it’s just hard to find work rn. However, keep looking, you’ll find it eventually.
I worked for 10 years in big tech, but quit the AR/VR field because its not going anywhere, and being defunded. I self taught myself audio engineering, and its been my hobby for many years which I am considering as a new direction for my engineering side. I’ve been looking briefly into shaders (graphics), and VJ tools like TouchDesigner (vvvv). Not to mention video games industry and 3D. I dont have a success story to share yet, I think there are a lot of opportunities for creative work that are near or using technology. You might get better chances of getting hired if you learn one of these tools and take a bootcamp to specialize, e.g. Unreal or TouchDesigner.

I think you can do both. Don’t use art as a reason to give up on tech, they combine together so well.
