    Throw a teaching certificate in
If you’re good, the skill is rare enough you will be fine

What “trips your trigger?” It’s important to enjoy your job

It makes sense that you’re questioning it before committing. A maths degree is one of those choices that sounds very straightforward from the outside, but feels very different once you’re actually in it.

A lot of people only realise how abstract it becomes when they’re halfway through the first year, and that shift from school-level maths to university-level maths can be surprising.

That said, enjoying problem-solving is a genuine advantage, because that’s really the core of the degree. The abstract parts are challenging, but they’re also what open doors to a lot of different fields, data, economics, finance, research, teaching, tech, modelling, and analytics.

You’re right that many people pair maths with coding or something more applied, but that doesn’t mean a maths degree is weak or useless. It simply means employers prefer people who can take the logical, analytical thinking from maths and apply it in a practical way using tools like programming, statistics, modelling, etc.

One thing that can help before you make a final decision is talking to people who actually studied maths or now work in maths-related roles. Hearing what their experience was really like, what they expected, what surprised them, how abstract it felt, and how they used it after graduating tends to give you a much clearer picture than open days or course descriptions.

If you genuinely enjoy problem-solving, a maths degree can be incredibly rewarding. But it’s also okay to figure out first whether you want something more applied, something technical like computer science, something analytical like economics, or something hybrid.

Getting insight from people who’ve lived those paths can make the choice feel a lot less like a gamble and a lot more like an informed step.
