Idk about calling it “safe” their ai will start recommending services based on reviews etc so its a good idea to focus on how search and ai results for these searches will continue to evolve, maybe even ask gpt or Gemini “who is the best plumber in my city” and examine what appears to be making a difference in these results
Edit just tried this was curious and yes gpt gives unsponsored answers to these types of questions so ppl are and will continue to ask about this
AI will eventually do it the same for local businesses and contractors. There’s no reason why it wouldn’t. It can give you instant background on each contractor, their pricing, reviews, etc. For example they can bring up a list of 10 recommendations with detailed background info on them, and the user can ask questions right there within the serp on any of them.
If Google is making money from ads on a query, they aren’t putting that at risk by introducing an AI overview.
Until the work out how to monetise the AI overview, then the game changes completely…
Local contractors will eventually get impacted. More people are using AI for search, and some people may want to do all their research without having to browse multiple pages to find a good contractor.
Nobody is using ai for local seatch. Generative search doesn’t have what it takes to do real time local search’s. It’s bias by its training data and is just as likely to hallucinate an answer as it is to list a company that’s been out of business for 2 years.
The problem with local SEO for contractors: the space is over saturated.
Google has already destroyed their Google search results.
As evident by the multitude of different comments here, it’s all guesswork. No one knows where AI will take local business search ATM. None of us can predict the future.
What I can say is that AI Overview and chat bots are not including SABs in their results right now. You’ll want a physical address displayed for your local business.
Keep your ear to the ground as AI search evolves (on all platforms) and you’ll organically learn which are the right moves to make as things change.
Definitely get some press. That’s always going to be king for its high DA back-links. Especially if they state “best contractor in [city name]” or similar.
Local SEO is still solid, map pack + reviews still rule for “plumber near me” searches. AI might mess with content sites, but service-based local intent? That’s Google’s cash cow, they’re not nuking that anytime soon.
Plenty of AI overview results in the roofing niche.
Absolutely. Most of my clients are contractors. There’s no ai snippets for searching for a plumber or contractor. You’re not asking it a question. You’re looking for something.
