No. It’s a different use case.
You google for a red shirt. You ask AI if your red shirt goes with those horrendous green pants.
AI is already affecting traditional searching. Internet traffic to some websites is declining, and people are clicking less and relying more on AI overviews or ChatGPT. Of course, this is not affecting all websites. Currently, only blogs and content websites are in imminent danger because it is easier to get information through AI.
You are running a forum. This type of website cannot be replaced by AI (for now). Maybe highly intelligent AI bots will be able to replace humans in forums. You won’t even know that you are communicating with AI.
It’s an interesting one I think. AI will certainly make inroads into search. I mean it already does. However, you have 3 things that you can leverage to continue driving traffic to your site.
1. There’s a clear reason for people to actually go on your website. You’re not relying on simple guide blog posts where people don’t care where they get the info. Instead people go on your forum to specifically talk to like minded people. They can’t do that using AI.
2. Pre existing community. You have a community you’ve built that will continue to benefit from and use your forum.
3. Strong SEO. Since you’ve been around for a while, your authority is probably quite high in your niche and you picked up tons of mentions on your site. This means you may we’ll be getting mentions from AI already!
So here is what you need to do to adapt. Look at your keyword strategy and adapt it to go after more AI proof keywords targeting the above advantages you discussed. Instead of trying to hit things like How to X, Why is X, What is X. You need to go after things like X forum, X community etc. as for more AI style searches, you’re looking at keywords like “What are the best forums for x” etc.
At this stage I’d argue AI is not the main issue you may be facing, but rather the trend for people to go to social media for answers, even things like reddit communities in your niche. But if you got a good community going you’ll be fine 👍
Google is incorporating Ai into traditional search. certainly not replacing it.
Something we don’t know about yet is ads in AI results. They are coming and depending on how they incorporate it that could change many aspects.
it already has in many industries

I personally think that traditional research on Google will stop and everything will go through AI. But we need to consider that AI is taking its information from the internet too.
So my chain of thought (nothing scientific, and happy to get destroyed by arguments) is that companies will need websites with a lot of content, be very detailed and get known for providing the right information to their customers so that AI can recommend them when a user needs their services.
So I think that one-pager websites are going to disappear, and full websites optimized for AI discoverability will be the next thing.
Let me know what y’all are thinking tho
TikTok alrrady took a ton of Google Traffic because people 25 and younger are using it as their own search engine. AI is capturing the rest with their overviews. Traditional search is on its last leg and the remainder of people who use it will eventually be forced to migrate. The internet is basically dead. The majority of websites lost their rankings and as a result lost their income so they had to close down. Those that are left are major players which Google will use for their overviews.
Yes, of course, it is already doing it. The funny thing is that search has been AI-powered for at least the last 15 years. What changed is that users can now interact in natural language and see it reflected in the interface, but it is not like AI just started three years ago.
