To be honest, I don’t know any longer. I’ve been involved in SEO for 25+ years, both on the agency side – as well as the in-house side.
In fact, I’ve made it a point to “switch” between those two because when you’re:
In an agency role, you’re always making recommendations, waiting to see them implemented, and effectively “limited” in how much time a client / project / challenge can receive. But, you’re afforded more diversity in sites, audiences, tech stacks, etc.
In an in-house role, you can feel stuck in a vacuum; little diversity across industries, audiences, et. al
–
That all said, in my experiences – I’d hope that an SEO agency’s CLIENT is looking for tangible results, information and guidance that’s both actionable and sustainable – and flexibility in how all of that is delivered over time – which is another an important factor: “staying power.”
If you’re individually motivated – you can and will find success; but partnering with the right agency/provider can really build upon your own professional experience and capabilities while improving (your company’s) presence, intelligence, visibility and acquisition.
Would be happy to share more if interested in any specific experiences.
Well as a web developer that offers SEO services, I look at things from a technical perspective. There are things like site performance, ld+json schemas, meta tag optimization, and html structure are things that are best addressed at the code level. I typically charge a flat fee of around $1000 for a technical site audit and updates.
So unless you’re comfortable diving into code and running technical audits, these are services that you wouldn’t be able to replicate.
Be careful many seo out there is a scam tho
Usually a combination of wisdom and diverse skill sets. You can do a lot yourself, but how much technical knowledge and expertise do you have when it comes to code and servers, how many trustworthy relationships have you built over the years in the industry, how much will it cost you to spend money on tools and subscriptions that aren’t free (vs agencies who include those subscription fees in their pricing model) etc?
Someone who’s been doing SEO for years (I’m in year 16) has seen trends come and go, knows what’s real and what to filter out, and has a broader view of what it takes to succeed online.
As far as pricing, if it’s 50 a month, they might sign you up on a local directory service or something, but I can’t imagine they’re delivering much value beyond that.
My clients who like to dabble in SEO will often get really excited about things they read online and ask me why my agency is not doing it, and it’s almost always something that I know, from experience, isn’t relevant or valuable, or may come back to haunt them later because it’s unethical or black hat.
There’s really nothing that can replace time and experience in any job, and SEO is the same. That’s not to say you can’t be successful if you DIY, it’s just different.
Expertise, experience, time and dedication; just like a DIY plumber vs a Pro plumber etc.
Monthly range depends on your niche, area (for local SEO), Ltv of your clients, your current revenue etc.
TBH if you’re already talking about low-quality providers, 50€/months… you’re not an easy person to work with. Do yourself and a potential SEO services provides a favor, ask yourself if your business needs it, if yes how much value it will bring to your business. If you see the value, money is not the problem.
1000€/month is still cheaper than any other form of performance marketing services.
