Here is a very quick rough free SEO plan:
1. get keywords you can rank for, use free tools like Google autocorrect or Shuttle SEO
2. build content for those keywords, answering searcher intent, and post this content on your website
3. do all the technical SEO spot on, url, title, h1, keyword in other headings
4. acquire backlinks to the content
5. focus on how you can turn your traffic into a conversion
Now, you can do that all yourself, and trust me, after you did that yourself once, you will seriously consider paying someone else to do it.
It is like playing golf:
1. get a ball and clubs
2. put the ball on the Tee
3. hit the ball with the club, aiming at the flag
4. keep hitting the ball with a different club
5. do that in maximum 4 shots
Very easy when you look at a professional doing it, but try a few times yourself, and then you appreciate the craft, and what went into it to be in a position where they can rank.

It’s not essential, and you can do it yourself, but of course you’ll need to learn, including through mistakes (which in some cases might even mean completely breaking your site).

To maintain their rankings. SEO is very volatile, and an experienced SEO can minimize the chances of mistakes.

Not really. Google changes its algorithm every few years and rolls out several core updates each year, not to mention other search engines and AI.

As explained above, quite a lot. You’ll want your site maintained, backlinks built, technical issues fixed, protection against Core Updates, and the ability to recover as quickly as possible if one affects you. In other words, you’ll want your website to grow.
I suggest you take a look to all posts in the group (well, let’s say first 20) and read them, then you’ll undesrtand the kind of issues that you may face and why SEO is an ongoing activity, whether it’s done by a copany or by yourself

You can do your own SEO if you have time, companies pay monthly because rankings depend on constant link building, content updates, and technical fixes that never stop.
I have been doing my own SEO and kind of struggling to gain traction. I have had my website in the College Sports space for about 4 years now and it gets more traffic from our social media posts than Google.
