They are not important anymore from a strict organic rankings perspective.
Search engines, specifically Google, might use the meta description, but they will often times provide a description in the search result that is grabbed from other areas of the article or site to provide a more relevant description that is closer to the original query. In this case, they could end up using your blurb or excerpt in the description on the SERP, or portions of them.
This is actually good news since if an “optimized” meta description typically focuses only on one keyword phrase, it would miss out on appearing for searches that weren’t as relevant or didn’t match as well. Since Google doesn’t use exact-match keywords really anymore, you’re better off not worrying about the meta description for SEO purposes.
However, writing a succinct description could help with other services that might grab your description. My recommendation would be to write a description that accurately describe the page and what they might expect to find on it. As a news article, something similar to the excerpt or blurb would be appropriate.
Meta descriptions don’t meta, I mean, they don’t matter at all.
Google has a habit of rewriting them.
