you’re both kinda right tbh.
renaming image files alone isn’t going to suddenly move rankings, especially for stock photos. google isn’t out here giving bonus points because you changed AdobeStock_12345.jpg to blue-widget.jpg. that said, it’s not useless either – it’s more about cleanup + accessibility + future-proofing than raw rankings.
important bit for your actual question though: no, you can’t just reupload an image with the same name and have it magically replace the one already used everywhere.
wordpress treats media items as unique attachments. if you upload a new image, it’s a new file with a new ID.
your options are basically:
use a plugin that does media replacement (replace file without changing the attachment ID), or
manually swap the image on each page, or
leave the file name alone and just fix alt text + title (which is where most of the real value is anyway)
if these are key conversion pages, fixing alt text and titles is 100% reasonable. i just wouldn’t burn hours bulk-renaming stock images unless everything else is already in good shape. this is very much a “nice to have,” not a needle-mover.
I don’t think that this work is worth it. If they are using stock photos, SEO is really not senseful for these images. And you have a way more efficient tasks to boast SEO besides some image file names.
But there should be a plugin for image replacement. But yes: you would have to go through ever single image. And as I mentioned: I don’t think that this work is really worth it
The filenames don’t matter. Ensure the alt text is correct, crawlers will read that.
