My cousin started working Panda Express a few years ago and she’s already making six figures as general manager. You can definitely climb up the corporate ladder through fast food, especially since you’re still young and you’re already moving up fast.

Figure out ways to further climb up, like how to get noticed by upper management. Keep your options open, look at other job openings. Being a manager at one restaurant can really open you up to becoming manager at other ones, and you can figure out which places are easier to climb than others.

It’s not the most glamorous job title, but hey district managers definitely make up to $150,000, so I don’t think the status of the job matters at that point.

There is nothing wrong with the pathway you’ve described. The reason people don’t speak on it is because it’s not glorious sounding.

Nobody wants to boast they run a McDonald’s or Walmart. However, those jobs pay well enough and can be obtained through hard work.

If you’re happy doing what you’re doing then I see no reason to change paths. The only reason I’d recommend you to change paths is if you have a direct way to higher pay through leveraging your experience.

If the amount you’re making is sufficient and you feel good about what a long-term career looks like for you there, it’s fine.

Service jobs like this can be *brutal*, but if you don’t hate the work and can see yourself doing it for your career, there’s no intrinsic problem with it.

As long as your salary combined with whatever benefits fits your lifestyle and you know you’ll be happy for the foreseeable future, there’s nothing wrong with it.

    Two factors you should consider:
    1. What is the ceiling here? Is it possible you’ll reach a role where you’re stuck for the rest of your life and aren’t fulfilled?

    2. How much do other people’s opinions affect you? Because the harsh truth is a lot of people will just hear ‘fast food’ even if you’re a C level employee. A similar thing is happening to a friend of mine in a retail franchise.

Personally I think no one should care about the second one but I mentioned it because I know a lot of people do get affected by those things in the long run. I know I used to for a long time

My younger sibling begrudgingly worked their way up the ladder at a pizza chain, used the experience to pivot to a ops manager role for a cooler industry

Please start saving now, even just a little but regularly. Be sure to contribute enough to a 401k to get the company match!

If it pays enough to afford to live alone and accumulate money for retirement and you like it enough to do it for 40 years, no, not really.

I became at retail manager for several years when I was young and made bank. I quit and went back to school because my colleagues who had been doing it for over a decade were cynical soulless husks and the thought of dealing with customers and corporate BS until I’m in my 50’s sounds like hell. If it makes you happy and you are sure you want to stick it out long-term, there’s nothing wrong with it.

Do you like doing what you’re doing? Is there a voice inside you screaming this is not it?

Because if you can get by, and then make a little extra and potentially move into director/district manager role in the future – why not? They seem to like you.

Why should you care about what anyone else thinks?
