For retail and food service you have to call the store you applied for and “follow up” on your application. They will not even look at your application otherwise.
Still going to be hard, but apply in person. I have never gotten a single offer from Linked In/Indeed, much better to go look locally for places with hiring signs. Even when they tell you to fill out the application online, they’ll remember your face and have a positive bias towards you if you just act friendly and normal. Emailing smaller organizations directly can also help(for YMCA/community center/non profit type jobs) (Yes I know it’s fucking frustrating, this is the only way I’ve managed tho)
Try finding a staffing agency.
Career consultant here who often works with people in your situation. I am going to be as blunt as you are being, here. You’re in emotion but you need practicality and a few mental switches because youre going the wrong way in a few areas.
You get a job by knowing your skillset. And when you have no had a job before, that doesn’t mean you have no skills. You just dont know what a skill is yet.
Not all jobs require experience. Easy no-skill jobs in retail are overloaded with people but the entire world is not retail.
Skills are Not required to be learned on a job in order to count. You can write down some skills from volunteer stuff, things you did for family, etc. You’re just starting out so that’s how it starts!
Volunteer stuff counts when you are young and starting out. 100%. Same with massive, strange pivots further up in careers. Anyone who says otherwise can fite me.
College and certs are helpful when you are ready to choose a Career…Not before! Get some work experience under your belt first. Which seems ridiculous but you are not ready to choose a career yet so don’t waste your money.
Get a list of your basic volunteer skills together. Apply with that to non-retail jobs, small biz, or or recruiter networks. They will get you into their training line if they have one.
I’m so sorry this is happening for you, it is absolutely shocking how hard it is for people to get entry level jobs right now. I was just at the grocery store last night and noticed that all of the cashiers were people in at least their 40s. This is the first time I’ve ever seen this, during summer it would typically be all high school and college students. Are there any career fairs in your area? Talking directly to the recruiters, learning more about the companies, and finding out directly if there are empty positions can sometimes help. Good luck!
You need to be better than 60% of people at your field in the area where you are
