   if debt is a thing, go accounting first. tons of remote roles, decent pay, you’ll see your kids. nursing plus loans is rough in this economy where finding stable work is already a pain

   Former public accountant here (accounting minor in college> big4 audit>law school).

   For accounting, it depends on what kind of accounting you have in mind. The typical path is public accounting which splits into tax or audit. Pay is OK but work/life balance doesn’t exist, and the burnout rate is high. You also always work in teams and interact with colleagues all day long (and frequently with clients if you’re in audit). Eventually you get to the sr. manager or director level and are expected to sell business, so not a great choice for an introvert. By the time you’re out of school Excel could be replaced with AI and with it many jobs.

   That is the public accounting track, but you could also work directly for a company. Larger companies have some entry level openings, but most hire burned out public accountants to go in-house. Pay is usually lower, but the work / life balance is much better.

   Lastly, you could do book keeping for small businesses. You don’t really need a 4-year degree for this and can learn enough by taking a few community college courses. Pay is hourly and you’ll be helping each client for a few hours every week at most, so need to build a book of business with multiple clients.
