I would swap this to “get some type of education”.
Degree, trades, medical training program etc, some type of training that will set you apart in a really tough job market.
I went to college and am still a broke loser. The only difference is that I now have over 50k in debt.
the problem is that i can’t afford to live while going to college. the cost of living is so high and people have bills. i wish i could work a job at a college campus part or even full time while going to school but it’s not affordable. until the cost of living is improved, we’re kind of stuck in limbo.
So what do we do when we are stuck and already have a useless bachelor degree?
I’m envious if finding an okay apprenticeship is a casual task in the US.
College is all about taking your money and making you a slave to the system these days. You’d be one of the lucky ones to get a decent job with a degree. The workforce is changing because of AI
I think you’re making a good generalized point. College has failed a lot of people and you hear the loudest of them on this sub. Is it for everyone? No. Is it the best option and an insane value (when free) for most people? I think so. Going to college is about learning how to learn, how to collaborate, communicate, and function independently – things young folks need now more than ever.
I agree with you.
Sorry but that is bullshit.
Not everyone is built for the college life. Learning a trade is fine too, will (most often) lead to less debt, and you can earn a nice income.
Some may also benefit from a side hustle they enjoy that can turn into a business down the line.
Point being, there are multiple options and you don’t have to pick the college route because that’s what you feel you’re ‘supposed to’ do (this was my mistake, as it turns out I wasn’t right for college and ended up hating what I was studying).
I think something more critical- Go get your bachelors degree in a field that actually matters in terms of value you can provide to a company. Getting a degree in communications, gender studies, art, creative writing is not going to get you anywhere except a ton of debt and no way to pay it off
I have my bachelors in computer science, and it has effectively ruined my chance of getting any job
My job had approved my schedule to be adjusted this semester so I can attend full time and keep my full time status at work also. My coworker is visibly upset/jealous of this and keeps making sly comments and remarks.
We live in the same state… you can use free community college no damn different than I am… people don’t want to put the work into bettering themselves they just want to took about it. Kids will not get enough financial aid to attend their 4 year university of choice and label it as they can’t go to college because they have such an ego as to not attending a community. It’s their own faults.
yea as someone with a degree dont listen to this bs
This is bad advice. A degree isn’t a golden ticket. Many people find themselves exactly where they were before getting it after they graduate. I guess getting a degree is better than doing nothing but it doesn’t resolve the problem of feeling stuck on its own.
In what US State is any college free
Honestly, it’s less about getting the degree or certificate. More about the social building aspect of going to college in your early 20s. Because those are still your very formative years. The most valuable thing I got out of college was not the degree, but the friends I made there who helped me get my first job which led to my next and just generally built my career.
Also, the statistics of going back to school after 30 and being successful with that degree usually is trending in the wrong direction.
