Bir kariyer peşinde koşmak zorunda kaldım, bunu yapmak istediğimden emin değilim ama oraya ulaşmak için zaten çok çalıştım
17F ve şu anda a-seviyelerimi inceliyorum. İstediğim hukuk fakültesine girebildiğimden emin olmak için elimden gelen her şeyi yaptım ve çevremdeki herkes avukat olma yolunda ilerlediğimden o kadar emin ki. ama ben? Dehşete düştüm. Bu aptal kariyer için çok korkuyorum çünkü eğitimde geçen yıllar çok korkutucu (ve inanılmaz derecede zor olduğunu duydum) ve sonrasında iyi maaşlı bir iş bile garanti edemiyorum öyle mi? Üstüne üstlük, son zamanlarda ona olan ilgimi tamamen kaybettim. You’ve come to the right place for advice! My big question is, what are you excited about in life? When you were younger, what did you dream of becoming?
Yes, actually. Major in something generic (I love to read, so I majored in English) at a *community college*, not a university. I did the university path, and if I didn’t get a full ride I wouldn’t have gone at all.
What you’re going to do with this degree is literally whatever you want. People who take specific majors open fewer doors than they close – your degree will be generic enough for you to more or less pick your own path. For instance, with just an English degree and the occasional professional certification, I became qualified for all of these jobs that I’ve had throughout my life:
– Meat market assistant manager and head department manager (no certs, a little bit of training though)
– IT documentation specialist and security technician (my current job: I do absolutely no technical work, but I have a Sec+)
– Tutor (60/hr [with a degree] is nothing to be snide about, plus you can freelance it very easily and be your own boss, set your own hours, and take your own clients)
– Internal communications (writing company-wide emails, taking meeting notes and circulating them, writing manuals for common questions, drafting SOP’s and policy documentation)
– Marketing and digital sales (I still do this a little bit at my current job, but not nearly as much as comms)
Bear in mind, all of these jobs (plus many, many more) can be gotten with a degree that STEM majors absolutely love to shit on. The least I made at any of the jobs I just listed was as a market manager, and even there I brought home ~$80k/year.
The best part about English specifically is that the major is – without question or competition – the absolute best prep for going into law for grad school. You will be able to chop through legalese like it’s nothing after the kinds of reading an English major will expose you to. Plus, having a good GPA (which isn’t hard to do at a CC) will open the door for grad school if you decide you want to pursue that later.
