I apply for absolutely everything who’s core requirements I MOSTLY meet. There’s always training and sometimes that will cover the parts you may not have the greatest strength in. It’s hard to get a job nowdays! The biggest red flags are simply if it seems like a scam. The absolute biggest one there is if the pay is extremely high and not normal for the job, with promise of very few working hours.

Gonna be honest. I dont skip as long as its relevant to me.

I was offered a position by Amazon in my field of expertise and tbh I was really uninterested by them. I still went through the entire (grueling) process just to:

    A) sharpen my interviewing skills

    B) see how much another company would pay for me

    C) see what other work environments are offered

I was honest at the very beginning that I had a good deal that the had to try to beat and while they did try, and got close. They still fell short.

My recommendation is come up with a list of “must haves” for yourself and think of how much it would cost to sell each one. Some of them you won’t agree to ever and thats perfectly okay. Some things (like being close to home) tack on some extra pay for them to meet etc.

Oh! I feel qualified to answer this one! As someone who applied for over 250 jobs for almost a year and a half, I had to come up with a system. I had multiple friends working in various high level roles tell me to just “apply for anything, you never know”. I just know that if I were sifting through applications it would irritate me to see someone with a HS diploma applying to be a surgeon.. ya know? So, I aimed for jobs that I mostly met the requirements for, or jobs that I maybe didn’t fully meet but I would use my cover letter to make it work for me. I wrote a different cover letter for every.single.job. I had several resumes saved that I’d cycle between depending on the job. I have made (accidentally) a career in customer service/patient care. I don’t have one area of expertise and I only have an AA. I had to WORK to land my current position and I didn’t meet one of their biggest requirements but I did so well in my interview and had so much relatable experience that they offered me the job. Now, I’m definitely bottom of the totem pole but it opened up a whole new world of possibility for me. So, I say keep applying even if it’s not always a 100% match. You never know!

The biggest mistake is thinking you are not qualified enough to apply, if you have some (many) of the requirements. Our new VP just got hired because she had the right bits and pieces of experience that they believed gave her a well-rounded overall experience for the role. She told us she applied thinking she was not qualified. Good for her for breaking through!
